Pramana and Intermountain Health Collaborate to Digitize 8 Million Archival Clinical Pathology Slides Using Advanced AI Technology

Pramana's digital pathology solution equips Intermountain Health with superior, consistent digital images, enhancing the efficiency of clinical research and streamlining workflows

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Pramana, Inc., an AI-enabled health tech company modernizing the pathology sector, and Intermountain Health, a not-for-profit system of 33 hospitals and more than 3,900 employed physicians and advanced practice clinicians, recently embarked on a multi-year partnership to build digital archives for anatomic pathology. As part of the agreement, Pramana will digitize approximately 8 million glass slides from Intermountain Health’s biorepository using Pramana's Spectral family of scanners and Intelligent Acquisition software.

"By digitizing glass slides, we are helping build massive and varied datasets that can be used by researchers to pave the way toward data-driven decision making and advanced workflow methods to simplify the daily tasks of pathologists,” said Prasanth Perugupalli, Chief Product Officer at Pramana. “Our collaboration with Intermountain Health further strengthens Pramana’s Digital Pathology as a Service (DPaaS) solution. Our solution mitigates most of the manual handling and preparation of the slides, which is otherwise a deterrent for biorepositories that need to justify the costs of digitization and storage. We are proud to enable Intermountain Health’s biorepository to achieve its goal for digital pathology.”

This agreement between Intermountain Health and Pramana includes a custom solution, incorporating robotic handling, label de-identification, autonomous scanning, and in-line quality assurance, to enable the most economically efficient digitization of glass slides. Pramana deployed its SpectralHT scanners and image acquisition and management software to achieve unprecedented digitization capacity per day at the Intermountain Biorepository facility.

"Intermountain Health has always been at the forefront of adopting innovative solutions to elevate patient care, and Pramana stands as an organization we believe in," said Karen Brownell, Vice President of Laboratory Services at Intermountain Health. "Pramana's SpectralHT digital scanning system is now in action, digitizing our pathology slides, resulting in a notable transformation of our workflow. These digital pathology slides are amplifying our research capabilities, all the while minimizing manual workload for our clinicians.”
