Sun Nuclear Debuts Simon, a Command Center for Linac Health in Radiation Oncology

  • Sun Nuclear announced the global launch of Simon™, a cloud-native, vendor-agnostic command center for linac health that unifies radiation therapy QA data across devices, vendors and clinical sites.
  • By turning QA data into clinical intelligence, Simon provides insights to help teams avoid machine downtime or treatment delays.
  • A Sun Nuclear-hosted webinar on November 17 will show how Simon unifies QA data and applies statistical process control to identify issues before a tolerance is breached.

MELBOURNE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sun Nuclear, a Mirion Medical company, announced the global launch of Simon™, a cloud-native, vendor-agnostic command center for linear accelerator (linac) health in radiation oncology. Working alongside SunCHECK® software or independently, Simon brings quality assurance (QA) data from across devices, vendors and sites into one comparable record, giving medical physicists a single view of machine health, from individual linacs to an entire network. By applying statistical process control, Simon identifies developing machine issues early, helping to avoid downtime and treatment delays.

“Quality assurance exists so that patients are treated accurately, precisely and on schedule,” said Margaret Johns, President, Sun Nuclear - Radiation Therapy QA. “Simon brings it together in one view, supporting fleet management and driving efficiency gains, while early warning helps teams avoid costly unplanned outages.”

Key benefits for radiation oncology teams include:

  • One view of the entire fleet: Shows every machine’s status in one place, including a unified calendar of QA checks, downtime, repairs and calibrations.
  • Early warning and detection: Helps teams identify drift before a tolerance trips.
  • Unified QA data: Turns results from across devices, vendors and sites into a comparable record.
  • Efficiency gains: Eliminates time spent pulling QA data into spreadsheets.
  • Standardization: Supports consistent QA across staff and sites, with visibility into whether the standard is being followed.
  • Audit readiness: Reduces effort for accreditation and audit preparation.

Early Clinical Experience at NYU Langone Health

Simon was previewed at the ASTRO 2026 Annual Meeting in Boston. David Barbee, Ph.D., DABR, Director of Technology and Innovation in Radiation at NYU Langone Health, a clinical partner in the development of Simon, spoke at the event, providing feedback after initial clinical experience with Simon. NYU Langone Health brought QA data, machine logs and Machine Performance Checks (MPC) results from its nine linacs across five regions into Simon, replacing manual processes that once took months. The team saw the early warning detection in action, discovering a jaw offset, an isocenter offset and a couch-shift alert. All three were identified while the machines were within tolerance, and they were fixed during planned maintenance.

“Standardizing our machine QA on SunCHECK across our sites in 2020 was a big step for our program. Simon is the next one,” said Barbee. “With QA data, machine logs and machine performance check results together in one place, we can trend performance over time and see change earlier, turning analysis that once took months into something we can do quickly. That helps us move faster and more proactively from analysis to action, for the benefit of our patients.”

Named for an Innovator in Radiation Therapy QA

Simon is named in honor of Sun Nuclear co-founder and one of radiation therapy QA’s foremost innovators. Bill Simon, M.S., Sun Nuclear Chief Science Officer, has spent decades developing technology that helps medical physicists measure and verify radiation therapy, including innovations in detector arrays and water tank scanning, that have since evolved into the QA technology clinics and delivery system vendors rely on today. While previewing Simon at ASTRO, Luis Rivera, executive vice president of Mirion Medical, described how Bill has always let the data guide his decisions.

Sun Nuclear will host a live webinar introducing Simon on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m. EST. The session includes a product demonstration and an overview of how Simon works alongside SunCHECK. To register, visit the event page.
