Elemental Machines Newest AI Agent Predicts Analytical Instrument Failures Months Before They Happen

Physical AI Identifies the Failure Mode, Root Cause, and Risk for Instruments From Any Manufacturer

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Elemental Machines, a pioneer in life sciences operational intelligence, today publicly introduced the Analytical Equipment Analyzer (AEA) Agent* on its Elemental Alloy™ Agentic AI Platform. AEA identifies analytical instruments that are likely to fail, months before the failure occurs, and explains why and how each instrument is likely to fail. This allows laboratories to prevent unplanned downtime, direct maintenance spending where it will have the greatest impact, and make better repair, replacement, and capital investment decisions. AEA is already in commercial use with select customers.

Real-time alerts tell you something is wrong right now, but AEA tells you which instrument is likely to fail months from now, why it will fail, and what to do to prevent it.

“How an instrument is used matters when you’re trying to understand its condition,” said Sridhar Iyengar, Ph.D., Founder and Chief Strategy & Technology Officer at Elemental Machines. “Two instruments of the same age can have vastly different operating histories. AEA brings physical AI to the laboratory by combining measured instrument usage with each instrument’s maintenance and operating records, so teams can see a failure coming and prevent it.”

Analytical instruments are among the most expensive assets in life sciences, but the spending around them is rarely tied to how they’re actually used. When an instrument develops a recurring problem, the information needed to understand it is scattered across separate records and siloed systems. Teams often learn about a problem only when the instrument fails, which can stop a clinical study or delay a batch release while they assemble that history. Meanwhile, service and replacement decisions often follow a calendar rather than actual use.

“Our customers are making expensive decisions about equipment every day,” said Kevin Ghiasi, VP of Global Alliances & AI Platform Strategy at Elemental Machines. “Should they service an instrument, replace it, or get more use from what they already own? AEA helps them answer those questions with a fuller picture of how the equipment has been used and maintained. We already have paying customers using AEA to bring evidence into those decisions. This is the value of Agentic AI: turning fragmented equipment data into actions that help protect capacity and guide spending.”

AEA analyzes usage data, service history, instrument logs, calibration records, and manufacturer documentation across months of operating history. From this information, AEA can identify an instrument that is likely to fail, months before the failure happens. For each instrument, AEA produces a health score, which shows the risk of failure, and a root cause analysis, which explains why the instrument is likely to fail and how. Every finding includes:

  • The predicted failure mode and its root cause
  • The risk of that failure occurring
  • Recommended actions to prevent or mitigate the failure
  • Confidence levels and the supporting evidence for each finding

AEA supports 47 unique classes of analytical equipment, including HPLC/UHPLC, LC-MS, GC-MS, GC, NMR, FTIR, qPCR, and dissolution testers. AEA is grounded in physical measurement. Its utilization data come from direct measurement of instrument usage by the Element-U sensor, which makes no contact with the instrument itself. The sensor clamps onto the exterior of any power cord, requiring no special wiring and no modification to the instrument. Unlike a smart plug, it does not sit in the instrument’s power path and does not require changes to IT network configurations.
