Totem Compass Delivers Record-Breaking Offline Network Performance at Lost Lands 2026, Keeping Attendees Connected Through Historic Crowds and Severe Weather

Powered by the new Version 5.0 firmware, the Unity Mesh Network™ carried more than 330,000 messages over the festival weekend—12 times more than Lost Lands 2025—as Totem debuted offline social networking at its largest official festival partnership to date.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Totem, Inc. (www.totemlabs.com), the company behind the Totem Compass and the Unity Mesh Network™, today announced its strongest real-world performance to date following Lost Lands Festival 2026. Powered by the newly released Version 5.0, Totem kept attendees connected through historic crowds and severe weather, while its network set all-time records for both range and capacity.

“Totem was one of the best things we brought to Lost Lands this year. With huge crowds and unreliable cell service, being able to find our friends with the Compass made the weekend so much easier.”

Lost Lands drew record crowds to Legend Valley, with up to 50,000 individual attendees across the three-day festival. An estimated 5,000+ Totem Compasses were in use on-site. That figure would represent approximately 10% adoption, nearly double Totem's previous record.

The Unity Mesh Network™ is Totem's custom-built offline communication system, designed specifically for dense, constantly shifting environments like music festivals. As more Totem Compasses enter a venue, the network grows stronger for everyone around them, and at Lost Lands it delivered its most impressive results yet:

  • 35 hops: an all-time record for the network and a 40% increase over the previous high of 25 hops, set at Electric Forest in June 2026. That is five times the hard maximum of 7 hops supported by Meshtastic, a widely used open-source LoRa mesh platform.
  • 330,000+ messages carried peer-to-peer over three days, 12 times the total from Lost Lands 2025.
  • 1.58 km maximum distance recorded across the network, enough to span the entire festival grounds and campgrounds.

“Lost Lands was one of Totem’s strongest performances yet,” said Carter Fowler, Founder and CEO of Totem. “When tens of thousands of people pack into one valley, centralized networks fail. Ours gets stronger because every Totem Compass on the ground makes the experience better for the people around it. This is the future of connectivity in an increasingly crowded world.”

Following the festival, Totem received a wave of customer reviews from attendees sharing how the Totem Compass shaped their weekend:

  • “Totem was one of the best things we brought to Lost Lands this year. With huge crowds and unreliable cell service, being able to find our friends with the Compass made the weekend so much easier.”
  • “My family of 7 used our Totems all weekend. They took to it quickly and were all so crazy happy. Many people stopped and asked us about them when we were seen. We highly recommend them!”
  • “Having the Totem at festivals has been an absolute game changer while trying to find the friend group. Especially this past Lost Lands, I was able to find my group in a big crowd so quickly.”

Totem's reliability also mattered beyond the music. Legend Valley was hit by record rainfall this year, roughly three times more than what’s normal for the time of year, and when severe weather moved through the grounds, the venue was evacuated twice, first on Saturday afternoon and again on Sunday night. In tough conditions for everyone on-site, Totem Compasses helped groups stay together and reunite quickly as crowds moved at once and cellular service was practically nonexistent.

“Moments like these are why Totem exists,” Fowler added. “The weekend brought some of the toughest conditions a festival can face, including historic crowds and devastating floods. Totem played a crucial role helping people stay connected and safe in the middle of it all. Knowing our community was able to rely on Totem when it mattered most means more to us than any record.”

The weekend's results were powered by Version 5.0, Totem's most powerful software release to date, which made its festival debut at Lost Lands. The update delivers unprecedented stability and introduces:

  • Passive calibration: the compass calibrates automatically during normal use, reducing the manual setup required
  • Longer battery life: about 30% more in Vibe Mode, the Compass's higher-performance setting
  • More responsive sound-reactive lighting: the light animations react to music more quickly and dramatically
  • Major Unity Mesh Network improvements: these drove the record hop count, message volume and range at Lost Lands
  • Version 5.0 is available now as a free update for all Totem Compass owners through the Totem Compass App.

Lost Lands also marked the debut of Totem’s offline social networking features, beginning with real-time, findable customer support on-site at the event. Attendees could add a team member as a Bond with a single tap and navigate straight to them, with no cell service required. It is the first step toward bringing offline social networking to every Totem Compass user through the Totem Compass App, running entirely on Totem's own infrastructure to connect people in places social networks have never reached.

Lost Lands 2026 is Totem's largest official festival partnership yet. It builds on successful 2026 collaborations with Disco Presents at Ubbi Dubbi and Relentless Beats at Goldrush. In the coming year, Totem plans to expand its partnership program significantly, with a bigger focus on and increased investment in festival collaborations.

Totem's growth continues to accelerate. The company now has more than 65,000 users across 79 countries, has generated over $4.5 million in revenue, and has raised more than $3 million from investors worldwide. Its audience has grown to more than 725,000 followers across social media, generating more than 700 million organic views.
