Fruitvale municipal workers give 72-hour strike notice
FRUITVALE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The union representing municipal workers for the Village of Fruitvale, CUPE 2087, served the Village a 72-hour strike notice this morning. If the Village does not improve its monetary offer, workers will be taking job action, up to and including a full strike.
“We came to the table to get a fair deal that is consistent with other municipalities in the region. But the Village’s refusal to offer us what other workers that do the same work means we need to turn up the pressure to get what we deserve,” says Kevin Pii, a Fruitvale worker and vice-president of CUPE 2087.
Fruitvale workers voted 100 per cent in favour of strike action in early March, after a mediation failed to help CUPE 2087 and the Village reach an agreement.
“We know this could disrupt our community, but we’re asking for a fair deal,” said Pii. “We deserve the same respect and compensation as municipal workers do in neighbouring communities. Fruitvale residents get it – now our employer must get it as well.”
Fruitvale workers will be in a legal strike position at 10 am, Thursday morning, May 14. CUPE 2087 will make every effort to update the public of any service disruptions as details are confirmed.
