Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 5047 President Shelley McNeil is calling on councillors to publicly clarify their position before staffing and school planning decisions are affected.

“School librarians are not extras,” said McNeil. “They are part of the learning infrastructure students rely on every single day. Schools and families deserve certainty now — not silence and last-minute decisions about whether these supports will continue.”

The organization says the ongoing lack of confirmation is already creating unnecessary instability for schools attempting to prepare for the next academic year.

“Councillors regularly speak about the importance of literacy, student wellbeing, and educational success,” said McNeil. “Those commitments have to be reflected in real funding decisions. You cannot claim literacy is a priority while refusing to confirm whether school library services will continue.”

School librarians support students with literacy development, research skills, digital literacy, learning supports, and access to safe and inclusive learning spaces. Advocates warn that destabilizing these services will have real consequences for students and school communities.

“This uncertainty is not neutral anymore,” said McNeil. “Every week council delays confirmation creates more instability for schools, staff, and families. Silence has consequences.”

CUPE 5047 is urging councillors to publicly commit to maintaining school librarian funding for the coming school year and provide schools with the clarity they need to plan effectively.

“If councillors believe school libraries matter, now is the time to say so clearly,” said McNeil. “Students should not be left wondering whether these supports will still exist in September.”

Ottawa’s Inaction Lets Smith Destroy Health Care

EDMONTON, AB--(BUSINESS WIRE)--CUPE Alberta President Raj Uppal is calling out the Liberal government in Ottawa for its inaction while the UCP dramatically expands private, patient paid health care in the province. “It’s been almost a year since the UCP passed Bill 11, allowing wealthy patients to buy their way to the front of the line for health care services,” said Uppal. “After all that time, Minister Michel this week sent a sternly worded note to the province asking them to change direction...

Union to hold solidarity rally outside Villa Marconi to protest job cuts, employer intimidation

OTTAWA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The residents of Villa Marconi are running out of clean laundry, and it is due to negligent policy making by management. In June, members of CUPE 4793 held an information picket outside the long-term care facility on Baseline Road to call out the callous layoffs in the laundry and environmental services department. Since then, management has cut hours for union workers and launched a campaign of retaliation and harassment against union members. Workers have been sent ho...
