Assemblymember Solache Visits OneLegacy Headquarters to Celebrate AB 466 Bill and Honor the Importance of Organ, Eye, and Tissue Donation

AZUSA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--OneLegacy, the largest organ, eye, and tissue recovery organization in the U.S., serving a diverse population of over 20 million people in Southern California, proudly welcomed California State Assemblymember José Luis Solache (D-62) to its Azusa headquarters for a special tour and conversation on the future of organ donation and transplantation.

During his visit, Assemblymember Solache met with OneLegacy CEO Prasad Garimella, toured the organization’s state-of-the-art donor recovery center, and spent time with donor families, transplant recipients, and members of OneLegacy’s staff. The visit provided an up-close look at how legislative efforts like Solache’s recently passed AB 466 bill translate into real lives saved and healed every day.

AB 466, signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom earlier this year, marks Assemblymember Solache’s first legislative achievement and a meaningful step toward saving more lives through organ donation. The new law brings organ donation education to California’s college campuses. With only 49% of eligible residents currently registered as organ donors, AB 466 helps close that gap by ensuring students, especially those who may not apply for a driver’s license right away, learn about the power they have to give others a second chance at life.

Among those who met with the Assemblymember was Eva Perez, a OneLegacy Ambassador. Mrs. Perez tragically lost her 6-year-old son Hernan due to a brain injury from a sledding accident and made the decision to say ‘yes’ to donation despite her grief. Hernan saved four lives through organ donation. His kidneys saved two adults, his heart went to a young boy, and his liver to a nine-year-old girl. Today, Eva and her family honor his legacy by advocating for the lifesaving power of donation.

Also in attendance was Isabel Sabori, who was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension as a teenager and later received a heart and double lung transplant after relocating from Sonora, Mexico, to the U.S. for medical care. Now more than a decade post-transplant, she volunteers as a OneLegacy Ambassador, inspiring others in the Hispanic community to say “YES” to organ donation.
