Smart Meter Announces Free Patient Onboarding and Engagement Services for RPM Devices and Lower Monthly Service Fees to Help Select Providers Grow RPM Programs
New offerings respond to rising operating costs, tightening margins, and potential Remote Physiologic Monitoring reimbursement cuts
TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Smart Meter, a leader in remote physiologic monitoring (also known as remote patient monitoring or RPM) solutions, today announced two new offerings for qualifying healthcare providers: free patient onboarding and engagement services to improve device use and adherence through its signature SmartTouch® program, and lower monthly service fees. Together, they are designed to help practices start, scale, and sustain RPM programs at a time when administrative demands and financial pressures are growing.
Healthcare Providers are being asked to do more with less. Staffing shortages, heavier documentation requirements, and larger patient panels have increased both administrative and clinical burden, while operating costs continue to climb. Many practices see the value of RPM for chronic disease management but find that the effort of enrolling patients, setting up devices, and keeping patients engaged can stall a program before it gains momentum.
“Providers came into medicine to care for patients, not to manage devices and logistics,” said Casey Pittock, CEO of Smart Meter. “Practices are being squeezed from every direction. We want to help by taking this necessary and time-consuming work off their plates and protect their margins, so they can keep offering RPM to the patients who benefit from it.”
Two Ways Smart Meter Is Supporting Providers
1. SmartTouch: Free Patient Onboarding and Engagement
Eligible providers can choose the level of support that fits their practice. Both options are available at no cost, with no time limit, and no hidden fees:
SmartTouch Onboarding: Free patient onboarding services, including device setup, patient education, and guiding patients through taking their first reading.
SmartTouch Engage: Free ongoing patient engagement services to help patients stay consistent taking reading, keep critical health data flowing, and keep RPM programs on track. SmartTouch Engage includes SmartTouch Onboarding.
2. Lower Monthly Service Fees
Select providers will also be eligible for lower monthly service fees that can include SmartTouch for free. Providers may choose SmartTouch Onboarding, SmartTouch Engage, or neither, and will still qualify for reduced monthly fees.
Responding to Narrowing Margins and Regulatory Uncertainty
The lower monthly fees come as RPM economics face added pressure. Reimbursement for RPM is already considered inadequate by many providers, and rising operating costs are narrowing margins further. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed changes affecting RPM in the 2027 Physician Fee Schedule. If finalized, the proposals could mean downward adjustments to RPM CPT code reimbursement, including CPT code 99453, which is intended to cover the cost of the monitoring device and its supply. Lower payment for that code would put more strain on practices already operating on thin margins and make RPM programs harder to start, scale, and sustain, particularly for practices without dedicated staff or resources.
“Practices are facing higher costs today and the possibility of lower reimbursement tomorrow,” said Pittock. “Lowering our monthly service fees is one way we can help providers stay financially viable and keep their RPM programs strong, whatever CMS decides. But at the end of the day, it’s the patients who stand to suffer the most, especially those who are most vulnerable due to geographic and socioeconomic factors that limit their access to quality care”.
