“The fact is we’re the lowest paid workers in our classifications on the island, not just in the city but the island as a whole”

“The fact is we’re the lowest paid workers in our classifications on the island, not just in the city but the island as a whole,” said CUPE 4386 President Craig Gardner. “The cost of living is constantly increasing, and wages just haven’t kept up. How are we supposed to hire and, most importantly, keep people when the wages are so low? The simple answer is we can’t.”

CUPE 4386’s contract expired at the end of 2025. They are fighting for wage increases that recognize the importance of the work they do and their role in keeping such a vital part of the community operational.

“The last thing we want is to disrupt anyone’s activities. We know that hockey, figure skating, and any number of events are happening each and every day because we’re the ones who make sure the centre is in tip-top shape for them. But that doesn’t mean we won’t fight for what we deserve,” finished Gardner.

CUPE 4386 is now in a legal strike position, however, they are looking forward to their final conciliation date with representatives of the municipality on October 19 in hopes a tentative agreement can be reached.
