EUMETSAT: Media Invitation

Weather in 4D Every 30 Minutes: Europe’s First Geostationary Infrared Sounder Enters Operational Service

DARMSTADT, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--For the first time, weather forecasters will have access to near-real-time, four-dimensional observations of the atmosphere over Europe every 30 minutes from Europe’s first meteorological infrared sounder in geostationary orbit.

EUMETSAT invites media to mark this milestone as the Infrared Sounder (IRS) on board MTG-S1 enters operational service. To mark the occasion, MTG-S1 will also take the name Meteosat-13.

The event will showcase the first operational IRS data and EUMETSAT’s 4D weather cube, which combines observations of atmospheric profiles, winds, convection and lightning from three key MTG instruments. Before MTG, only weather models could provide this complete view; now it can be built from real observations and updated every 30 minutes.

Journalists will have the opportunity to discover the new data and hear how they can support weather forecasting and the monitoring of rapidly developing and potentially severe weather.

Media representatives are invited to register by contacting press@eumetsat.int by 17:00 CEST on 8 October 2026. Journalists may register either for the full on-site programme or to attend the 13:00 press conference online only.

Programme (all times in CEST)

11:00 – Welcome and behind-the-scenes visit at EUMETSAT

  • Presentation of the MTG-S1 satellite model
  • Visit to the Mission Control Room, from where the satellite is operated

12:00 – Buffet lunch and possibility to conduct interviews

Opportunity for informal exchanges with EUMETSAT experts and other participants.

EUMETSAT Takes Control of MTG-I2

DARMSTADT, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--EUMETSAT’s Mission Control Centre in Darmstadt, Germany, took over control of the newest addition to its fleet of meteorological satellites, Meteosat Third Generation Imager 2 (MTG-I2), on 9 September 2026, following the successful completion of its Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP). MTG-I2 launched from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana on 27 August 2026 and has now reached its geostationary orbit, around 36,000 km above Earth. During LEOP, carried out...

MTG-I2 Safely in Orbit, Unlocking Faster and Sharper Weather Monitoring Across Europe

DARMSTADT, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Meteosat Third Generation Imager 2 satellite (MTG-I2) has successfully passed its first critical post-launch milestones, completing the first full Meteosat Third Generation constellation in orbit. The imager satellite MTG-I2 is safely in orbit and operating as expected following its successful launch yesterday at 22:11 CEST on board an Ariane 6 rocket from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. Our teams have established communication with the spacecraft,...

Europe’s First Meteorological Infrared Sounder Reveals the Atmosphere in 3D

BRUSSELS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The first images from Europe’s pioneering meteorological infrared sounder were unveiled today at the EU Space Conference in Brussels, marking a major advance in the ability to monitor how the atmosphere evolves before and during severe weather. The images were captured by the Infrared Sounder (IRS) flying aboard Meteosat Third Generation Sounder-1 (MTG-S1), the first ever European satellite in geostationary orbit to carry a hyperspectral atmospheric sounder.
