Bitwarden Appoints Cybersecurity Product Leader Mary Writz as Chief Product Officer

Writz will drive product strategy as Bitwarden scales its enterprise business and builds a broader security portfolio

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Bitwarden, the trusted leader in passkey, password, and secrets management, today announced the appointment of Mary Writz as chief product officer. Writz brings more than 20 years of cybersecurity and product leadership experience and will lead product strategy and portfolio development for the company, which serves more than 15 million users and over 80,000 businesses across 180 countries.

Writz previously held product leadership roles at Red Canary, Zscaler, and ForgeRock, now part of Ping Identity, following earlier experience at Hewlett Packard and IBM. Her work has spanned identity and access management, threat detection, machine learning, and security intelligence, giving her broad experience building and scaling security products for complex enterprise environments.

“As Bitwarden expands, product strategy, customer insight, and go-to-market execution must operate as a unified system," said Mike Sullivan, chief executive officer, Bitwarden. "Mary has spent her career translating complex cybersecurity problems into products that work at enterprise scale. Her leadership will help us sharpen product priorities, move faster across the product lifecycle, and meet the demands of our largest customers."

Turning customer insight into products built to scale

Writz will oversee product management, product design, product marketing, and strategy for advancing new Bitwarden offerings. This structure creates a more direct path from customer and market insight through product strategy, development, positioning, launch, and adoption. She will work closely with engineering, marketing, sales, and customer success teams to guide product investment and ensure the portfolio evolves with changing customer needs.

“Access is getting more complex. Security shouldn’t have to,” said Writz. “Employees, developers, applications, and AI agents all need access to critical systems, and security and IT teams need the visibility and control to govern that access without slowing people down. Bitwarden has earned trust by making credential security easy to use. My focus is building on that foundation and expanding what Bitwarden can do for customers.”

Expanded leadership for continued growth

Bitwarden recently appointed Mike Sullivan as chief executive officer and Andrew Hartnett as chief technology officer, while founder Kyle Spearrin moved into the role of chief innovation officer. Writz adds dedicated product leadership to an executive team with distinct accountability across company strategy, product direction, engineering, and long-term innovation.

These appointments accompany a 50% increase in research and development investment focused on user experience and the delivery of new security capabilities.
