Smead Capital Management Filed for Two New Value Funds in Canada

Smead Global ex-US Value Fund and Smead US Value Fund bring the firm’s long-term, concentrated value discipline to Canadian investors

PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Smead Capital Management, a Phoenix-based investment management firm and a leader in value investing, together with its Canadian affiliate Smead Capital Management (Canada) Ltd., today announced it has filed a prospectus for two mutual funds for Canadian investors: the Smead Global ex-US Value Fund and the Smead US Value Fund. The funds have since received a final receipt from the applicable Canadian securities regulatory authorities and are available on Fundserv, allowing orders to be placed through registered dealers in advance of the funds’ launch, with information on the funds available through SEDAR+. These developments mark the next phase of the firm’s expansion into Canada, following the registration of Smead Capital Management (Canada) Ltd. earlier this year.

The two funds bring Smead’s long-term, concentrated value investing approach to Canadian investors across U.S. and global ex-U.S. equities. Both funds seek long-term capital appreciation and intend to maintain concentrated portfolios of companies selected using Smead’s eight criteria for stock selection. These differentiated value strategies are grounded in a low-turnover approach, allowing investors to play the long game.

“Canada has been a natural extension for Smead because we have spent years investing in Canadian businesses and building relationships with investors and companies across the country. We believe Canadian investors share our appreciation for patience, discipline and taking a genuinely long-term approach to building wealth,” said Cole Smead, CFA, CEO and Portfolio Manager of Smead Capital Management. “These funds allow us to bring the concentrated value discipline we have practiced for nearly two decades to Canadian advisors and their investors. We look forward to building on our presence here for years to come.”

The Smead Global ex-US Value Fund seeks to achieve long-term capital appreciation by investing directly or indirectly in global securities. Under normal market conditions, the fund will invest predominantly in non-U.S. companies and primarily in large-cap companies across developed markets. The fund may invest significantly in Canada, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom.

The Smead US Value Fund seeks to achieve long-term capital appreciation by investing directly or indirectly in U.S. securities. Under normal market conditions, the fund will invest predominantly in U.S. companies, primarily focusing on large-cap businesses.

Smead Capital Management (Canada) Ltd. serves as investment fund manager, portfolio manager and trustee of the funds, with Smead Capital Management, Inc. serving as sub-adviser. Cole Smead serves as lead portfolio manager of the Smead Global ex-US Value Fund and co-portfolio manager of the Smead US Value Fund, while William W. Smead serves as lead portfolio manager of the Smead US Value Fund. The funds mark Smead’s first Canadian-domiciled mutual funds, purpose-built for Canadian investors alongside the firm’s existing U.S. strategies. Service providers for the funds include Bennett Jones as legal counsel; RBC Investor Services Trust as custodian; SGGG Fund Services Inc. as fund administrator and registrar; and Ernst & Young LLP as auditor.

The Canadian expansion builds on Smead’s longstanding investment activity in the country and the establishment of Smead Capital Management (Canada) Ltd. In July, the firm announced that its Canadian subsidiary had become registered with the Ontario Securities Commission, opening the door to Smead’s first formal expansion into Canada.
