MIPS Leads Open Standards Development for Physical AI Platforms as RISC-V International Premier Member

MIPS combines foundry scale, processor IP, software-first design tools, and open standards leadership to help customers build workload-optimized computing platforms for AI beyond the data center

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MIPS, by GF, today announced it is now a Premier Member of RISC-V International, with Yankin Tanurhan, SVP & CTO of MIPS, by GF, appointed as Vice Chairman of the RISC-V International Board. The milestone advances GF and MIPS leadership in the open standards and semiconductor technologies required to build physical AI platforms for aerospace, artificial intelligence, automotive, industrial, and intelligent edge applications. GF’s long-standing commitment to open standards is now extended through MIPS, an industry-leading AI platform provider, as both companies work with the RISC-V ecosystem to accelerate innovation in workload-optimized computing beyond the data center.

“AI is rapidly moving from the data center into the physical world, where intelligent systems must sense, decide, and act in real time under strict power, safety, and reliability constraints,” said Yankin Tanurhan, CTO and Senior Vice President of MIPS, by GF. “That shift requires a new class of compute platforms that are open, efficient, configurable, and tightly aligned from software to silicon. By expanding our role in RISC-V International, MIPS is helping define the open standards, processor IP, software-first development tools, and ecosystem foundation customers need to build differentiated physical AI platforms at scale.”

As an active member of several strategic RISC-V International committees, task groups, and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) focused on mission-critical, automotive, safety, security, and AI standards, including the Automotive, Functional Safety, Crypto, Vector, and Documentation SIGs, MIPS is helping define the open architecture foundation needed for physical AI platforms. Those contributions connect RISC-V standards work with differentiated processor microarchitecture, custom silicon solutions, and market-leading software stacks that customers can use to build workload-optimized systems.

Physical AI platforms bring sensing, compute, control, and software together so intelligent systems can perceive their environment, make decisions in real time, and act safely at the edge. These platforms require processor architectures that are efficient, configurable, standards-based, and closely aligned with the manufacturing, packaging, and software ecosystems needed to move from design to deployment.

“GF and MIPS together bring a legacy of RISC-V innovation that will be a valuable addition to the RISC-V ecosystem, and we’re delighted to welcome them as a Premium Member,” said Andrea Gallo, CEO of RISC-V International. “We look forward to their continued contributions that will help drive the adoption of RISC-V in high-throughput real-time platforms.”

Customer adoption of AI outside the data center will depend on open, standards-based technology that can be tailored to real workloads. To meet performance, efficiency, safety, and time-to-market goals customers need earlier visibility into how their software will execute on target hardware. MIPS enables this software-first workflow with advanced processor modeling and software tools that expose workload insights, support software and hardware co-design, and use the industry’s broadest RISC-V based processor IP portfolio.

“GlobalFoundries' decision to join RISC-V International as a Premium Member reinforces that its acquisitions of MIPS and ARC were strategic investments supporting a long-term commitment to RISC-V. The architecture has matured into a proven foundation for semiconductor innovation, particularly in the process nodes where GlobalFoundries is highly competitive,” said Ed Wilford, Senior Research Director, Omdia. “Together, MIPS, ARC, and GF provide customers with an open path from design to fabrication, enabling greater customization, faster development, and stronger supply chain resilience while further strengthening the RISC-V ecosystem by bringing a major foundry more deeply into the standard.”

MIPS partners with leading OEMs and integrators in automotive, aerospace, robotics, and embedded computing markets to help build physical AI platforms from open standards, processor IP, software-first tools, and GF-backed silicon technologies.
