OKI Signs Supply Contract with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for Towed Passive Sonar for Australia’s New General-Purpose Frigates

- Contributing to the Overseas Transfer of Defense Equipment by Leveraging Technologies and Expertise Developed Through Sonar Systems for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force -

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--OKI (TOKYO: 6703) signed a supply contract with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) for towed passive sonar (Note 1) and related equipment to be installed on Australia’s new general-purpose frigates. The contract covers equipment for the first three vessels in the fleet of eleven new general-purpose frigates planned by the Australian Government.

In August 2025, the Australian Government selected Japan’s FY2024 improved Mogami-class frigate, known as the “06FFM,” an upgraded version of the Mogami-class frigate, for its new General Purpose Frigate program. The 06FFM is equipped with OKI’s towed passive sonar and related equipment. The contract was signed in recognition of the proven track record of these systems on Mogami-class frigates. This marks OKI’s first overseas transfer of defense equipment.

OKI has been engaged in the development of underwater acoustic technologies for over 90 years. The company has designed and manufactured underwater acoustic sensors and related equipment, primarily for defense applications. For sonar systems used by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, OKI provides comprehensive support throughout the product lifecycle, from design to maintenance. Drawing on its accumulated technologies, expertise, and proven track record, OKI will supply towed passive sonar and related equipment for Australia under its contract with MHI.

Under its Management Plan 2031, OKI has set forth a commitment to focus on and strengthen its businesses in the defense and ocean sectors, which have been designated as priority areas under the Japanese government’s growth strategy. To meet growing demand in the defense sector, OKI plans to expand its production capacity, strengthen its overhaul capabilities, and through this project, contribute to maritime safety both in Japan and internationally.
