Carriers Reported Mixed Results for Individual Disability Insurance Sales

STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Gen Re recently released its U.S. Individual Disability Market Survey which captures Non-Cancelable, Guaranteed Renewable, Guaranteed Standard Issue, and Buy-Sell new sales and inforce results. Sixteen carriers participated in the survey, reporting $5.6 billion in inforce premium, an increase of 1.9% over 2024 results. New sales were up 2.7% to $491.8 million, while the number of new policies written increased 0.7% year over year.

Additional highlights from this annual benchmark report include:

  • By product line, Non-Cancelable inforce premium grew 2.0% to $4.7 billion, representing 85% of total inforce premium. Guaranteed Renewable inforce premium grew 2.2% reaching $793.7 million, while Buy-Sell declined 7.0% to $41.8 million, trending down for the 17th consecutive year.
  • Non-Cancelable new sales premium grew 3.8%, while Guaranteed Renewable fell 4.3%. Buy-Sell new sales premium increased 10.4% in 2025, bouncing back from a decline of 23.9% in 2024.
  • The total number of policies inforce remained level at 3.0 million, decreasing by 0.2%, while the total number of new policies issued showed a slight increase at 0.7%. New Non-Cancelable policies grew 3.8%, while Guaranteed Renewable policies fell 3.9%.
  • The GSI market had another strong year with premium and the number of policies sold up year over year.
