OMRON Debuts High-Capacity Relays Enabling Smarter EV and ESS Designs

Relays support safer, more efficient operation in EV charging and energy storage applications

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--OMRON Electronic Components today announced the launch of its G9KD and G9KJ high-voltage DC power relays, designed to support the growing performance, safety, and miniaturization demands of next-generation energy systems, including EV charging infrastructure and energy storage systems (ESS).

As electrification continues to accelerate across industries, high-voltage DC systems are becoming increasingly common in applications such as EV chargers, battery storage, and V2X systems. These environments require reliable switching components that can safely handle higher voltages and currents while enabling more compact, integrated system designs.

The G9KD and G9KJ relays address these needs with a combination of high switching capacity, compact form factors, and optimized performance for specific use cases within high-voltage DC systems.

The G9KD is a high-capacity PCB power relay capable of switching up to 1,500 VDC and carrying up to 150A, making it well-suited for main circuit applications in demanding energy systems. Designed with robust insulation and low contact resistance, the G9KD allows designers to replace larger, conventional contractors with PCB-mounted relays – helping reduce system size, simplify integration, and lower overall costs.

G9KJ complements the G9KD as a compact pre-charge relay optimized for managing current in high-voltage DC systems. Designed for pre-charge applications in EV charging and ESS, the G9KJ helps protect components, improve system reliability, and support safer operation in high-voltage architectures.

Both relays are designed to support the transition toward higher voltage platforms, including 800V and 1,500V architecture, while addressing key industry challenges such as space constraints, thermal performance, and system efficiency.

Other features and benefits of the technology include:

  • Support for compact, PCB-mounted designs to reduce system footprint
  • High insulation performance and dielectric strength for enhanced safety
  • Optimized solutions for both main circuit (G9KD) and pre-charge (G9KJ) applications
  • Reliable performance across demanding operating environments

“Energy systems are rapidly evolving toward higher voltages and greater power density,” said Zac Hendrix, product marketing supervisor at OMRON Electronic Components. “With the G9KD and G9KJ, we’re enabling engineers to design safer, more compact, and more efficient systems by delivering relay solutions tailored to both main power and pre-charge applications.”

As EV infrastructure and energy storage systems continue to scale, the G9KD and G9KJ position OMRON to meet growing demand for high-performance, PCB-based relay solutions that bridge the gap between traditional contactors and next-generation power electronics.
