Totem Evolves the Fastest-Growing Offline Navigation Device with Version 4.1 and Redesigned App Experience

Faster device performance and a streamlined app experience make the viral Friend-Finding Compass easier and more reliable than ever.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Totem (www.totemlabs.com), the startup behind the first widely adopted peer-to-peer navigation device designed to work entirely without cellular service, today announced Version 4.1 of the Totem Compass and a newly redesigned Totem Compass App. Together, these represent the most significant performance and usability advancement since the product’s viral market debut in 2024.

Version 4.1 introduces substantial performance enhancements to the Totem Compass, unlocking 50% more available RAM and enabling up to 4x faster processing while navigating to peers. These improvements translate into faster responsiveness, greatly increased stability, and more reliable performance—particularly in the high-density environments (music festivals, large events, and crowded outdoor spaces) that has catapulted Totem to becoming social media’s most viral product in history with less than a year on the market.

At the same time, Totem has reimagined the Totem Compass App to dramatically simplify setup, onboarding, and device management. The redesigned experience includes guided tutorials, in-app notifications, and streamlined peer management, making it easier than ever for both new and returning users to get connected and stay connected—while preserving the Totem Compass’s fully offline, screen-free navigation system.

For the first time, the companion app now enables Bluetooth over-the-air updates for the Totem Compass, allowing users to install new firmware directly from their phones without requiring a personal hotspot or home Wi-Fi configuration. This seamless update process represents a major improvement in customer experience and ongoing device support.

“Totem is most often used in the kinds of environments where speed and reliability really matter,” said Carter Fowler, Co-Founder and CEO of Totem. “This update makes the device more responsive and the setup process satisfyingly simple, arriving just in time to meet the incredible demand for the 2026 events season.”

Version 4.1 and the updated Totem Compass App are available now, free for all existing Totem Compass users. Users can update and access new features through the app, which can be downloaded globally on the App Store and Google Play Store.
