Syniverse and BICS Partner to Accelerate Global 5G Standalone Roaming

Collaboration creates a clearer path for operators to enhance roaming capabilities

TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Syniverse, the world's most connected company® and a global leader in international connectivity, and BICS, a Proximus Global Company and leading digital communications enabler, have partnered to expand the reach of 5G Standalone (SA) roaming. Through this collaboration, Syniverse and BICS are integrating their 5G Signaling Hub solutions and establishing peering arrangements to significantly enhance 5G SA roaming capabilities for operators worldwide.

Signaling hubs, such as those provided by Syniverse and BICS, offer a secure, reliable, and efficient path for mobile network operators (MNOs) to establish 5G SA roaming connections. By peering with these hubs, operators connected to one can more easily establish 5G SA roaming relationships with operators on the other. Across Syniverse and BICS, multiple MNOs can now support 5G SA roaming with a 5G core network, and additional MNOs are scheduled to join in the near future.

"5G standalone roaming only works when operators can trust what happens the moment their traffic crosses a network boundary," said John Wick, Chief Product Officer at Syniverse. "Our job is to remove friction at that handoff, so operators are not negotiating one-off connections every time they want to launch a new roaming relationship. By peering with BICS, we're making it easier for operators to focus on delivering reliable experiences to people who expect their devices to work wherever they travel."

5G SA roaming opens the door to ultra-low latency services, including cross-border IoT connectivity, cloud gaming, private networks, and network slicing. While Ericsson's industry projections anticipate that 85% of the global population will have access to 5G by 2031, roaming rollout has been slowed by the need for enhanced security frameworks, updated commercial agreements, and rigorous technical testing.

"Establishing global 5G SA roaming is fundamental to unlocking the full potential of 5G SA,” said Jorn Vercamert, Chief Product Officer at Proximus Global. "Through our partnership with Syniverse, we are expanding the reach of 5G SA roaming and fostering a shared ecosystem that enables operators to deliver next-generation services at scale.”

Syniverse brings decades of roaming and interconnect experience to the partnership with Kaleido Intelligence's top IPX network. With more than 830 connections worldwide and access to 97% of mobile devices, plus increasing support for non-terrestrial networks, Syniverse provides operators with a single, secure connection to support roaming across generations of network technology.

Proximus Global, through its subsidiary BICS, brings unrivalled expertise in global mobility, roaming, and interconnect to the partnership. BICS provides secure, high-performance connectivity reaching over 5 billion subscribers and more than 1,000 mobile destinations worldwide, offering operators a single, trusted connection to deliver seamless, future-proof interoperability across technologies and borders.

Together, Syniverse and BICS have been instrumental in driving the global adoption of 5G SA roaming, enabling a majority of international roaming traffic. MNOs interested in a peering relationship can visit https://www.syniverse.com or https://www.bics.com/5g/ to learn more.
