New Study Finds Restart of V.C. Summer Project Will Support 10,000 South Carolina Jobs

PricewaterhouseCoopers Report Details Comprehensive Economic Impact During Construction and Ongoing Operations

COLUMBIA, S.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Westinghouse Electric Company released a comprehensive, independent report from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC (PwC) detailing the substantial economic impact of completing the two partially built AP1000® advanced modular reactors at V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in Jenkinsville, South Carolina.

The study found that the construction phase of the V.C. Summer project can create more than $7.3 billion of gross domestic product (GDP) for the state, while supporting 7,300 high-paying South Carolina jobs annually. Once operational, the two AP1000 units at V.C. Summer would create an additional $1.6 billion of annual South Carolina GDP and support more than 2,700 jobs in the state annually over an 80-year lifetime.

“The construction of the two nuclear reactors at V.C. Summer marks a major step forward in our region’s economic development,” said Ethel Bunch, Founder of the Palmetto Nuclear Coalition (PNC). “From thousands of high-skilled construction jobs to long-term careers in engineering, operations and maintenance, this project is creating a lasting economic engine that powers local communities with stable careers and sustained growth. As South Carolina emerges as the catalyst for America’s nuclear resurgence, PNC is proud to support Westinghouse as these reactors come to life.”

“South Carolina is poised to become a national leader in the deployment of advanced new nuclear generation,” said Dan Sumner, Interim CEO, Westinghouse. “This report highlights that the two AP1000 units at V.C. Summer would generate lasting economic benefits for the state, creating thousands of high-paying, highly skilled jobs while supporting the future expansion of South Carolina’s industrial base.”

Additional key findings outlined in the PwC report include:

  • Two AP1000 units can provide 2,300 MWe of nuclear capacity, which is enough to power at least 1.5 million homes in South Carolina.
  • During construction, the two AP1000 units at V.C. Summer would contribute $13.8 billion to U.S. GDP and support 12,900 U.S. jobs annually.
  • During its 80-year lifespan, the two V.C. Summer AP1000 units would contribute $2.1 billion in annual U.S. GDP, while supporting 3,700 high paying U.S. jobs annually.

The advanced AP1000 reactor is the only operating Generation III+ reactor with fully passive safety systems, modular construction design and the smallest footprint per MWe on the market. There are six AP1000 reactors currently setting operational performance and availability records worldwide with 14 additional reactors under construction and five more under contract. The AP1000 technology has been selected for nuclear energy programs in Poland, Ukraine and Bulgaria, and is also under consideration at multiple other sites in Europe, the Middle East, and North America.
