Wolters Kluwer Adds UpToDate Lexidrug’s Comprehensive Drug Information to GenAI-powered Clinical Decision Support, UpToDate Expert AI

The drug information expansion spotlights one of several upcoming content enhancements to UpToDate Expert AI

WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Wolters Kluwer Health today announced the first in a series of planned expansions of its GenAI clinical decision support solution, UpToDate® Expert AI. Comprehensive medication information from UpToDate Lexidrug, the drug reference tool trusted by thousands of clinicians, pharmacists and hospital pharmacies, will now be integrated into the AI resource for enhanced medication and therapeutic decision support.

“Since we launched UpToDate Expert AI in September, we have been working with more than 50 major U.S. health systems to deploy UpToDate Expert AI enterprise wide. The response clearly demonstrates clinicians and healthcare enterprises want GenAI-delivered medical information built on evidence-based content and functionality that is vetted by experts in the loop,” said Yaw Fellin, SVP and General Manager, Clinical Decision Support and Provider Solutions at Wolters Kluwer Health.

Trusted, transparent AI answers to support critical medication decisions

Nearly a third of clinicians’ questions (30%) are drug-related, according to traditional UpToDate usage trends. With UpToDate Expert AI, clinicians get more in-depth answers to vital questions from a solid foundation of approximately 3,000 drug topics in the areas most requested by UpToDate users.

The vetted drug topics are written and curated by the pharmacists and clinical experts behind UpToDate Lexidrug. The expanded drug information is also fully harmonized with the trusted content of UpToDate, which supports generative answers that avoid potential issues stemming from outdated or inconsistent sources across the internet.

Similar to a chatbot, clinicians can ask natural language questions about medications such as:

  • 30-year-old female needs Arava for rheumatoid arthritis. Is contraception required while taking?
  • Does risperidone or aripiprazole have a higher risk of QTc prolongation?
  • Allopurinol, spironolactone, lisinopril; which of these medications is causing gynecomastia in my patient?

Continuous feedback loop drives enhancements to UpToDate Expert AI

Fellin added, “This is one of several expansions and enhancements in our roadmap for UpToDate Expert AI. For example, in addition to continuously enhancing speed and usability, we know there is interest in more drug information at point-of-care. Doctors, nurses and health leaders are our north star, and we’ll continue to iterate and enhance based on the feedback and excitement they share.”

UpToDate Expert AI will be demonstrated at the Wolters Kluwer Health booth #1644 at the ASHP (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists) Midyear Clinical Meeting held December 8-10, 2025.
