Health System Adoption of Wolters Kluwer UpToDate Expert AI Now Reaching Approximately 2,500 U.S. Hospitals and Health Systems

UpToDate adds rigorously reviewed AI drug dosing tested against real world medication questions

WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Wolters Kluwer Health announces UpToDate® healthcare system customers in the U.S. and globally are rapidly adopting UpToDate Expert AI for enterprise-level Clinical AI that is reliable, optimized for governance, and more fully integrated in their workflows. In all, approximately 2,500 hospitals and health systems, representing over 90% of U.S. UpToDate Enterprise Edition customers, have chosen UpToDate Expert AI as their go-to clinical AI for their health organizations. International uptake spans over 230 pilot customer sites in 36 countries and is growing. The solution now also includes rigorously validated AI drug dosing.

Hospitals opt for trusted clinical AI

Wolters Kluwer is seeing strong adoption of UpToDate Expert AI across a spectrum of care sites in the U.S. and globally, from academic medical centers to integrated delivery networks and community hospitals. Among the healthcare systems implementing UpToDate Expert AI are Sharp HealthCare in San Diego, Calif., Duke University Health System in Durham, N.C., and University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City, Iowa, and Intermountain Health with 34 sites across the northwest.

“Healthcare system leaders have told us they want Clinical AI solutions with clear governance guardrails and seamless integration into the workflow,” said Yaw Fellin, SVP and GM, Clinical Decision Support and Provider Solutions, Wolters Kluwer Health. “They are asking for a validation model that goes beyond the constraints of knowledge tests. Governance teams need to assess whether AI-generated outputs are clinically useful, grounded in trusted knowledge, and reliable to use in complex, real-world point of care scenarios.”

Delivering reliable, trusted drug dosing for enterprise use

UpToDate Expert AI can now help U.S. clinicians to get answers with drug dosing guidance, informed by key clinical considerations and a supporting rationale directly within the flow of their queries. Integrated drug dosing capabilities can help answer these clinicians’ medication-related questions more efficiently, while supporting confident, evidence-based decision-making. Because drug dosing depends on multiple patient and medication specific factors, UpToDate Expert AI is designed to deliver guidance grounded in trusted clinical content with transparent assumptions that clinicians can evaluate in the context of individual patients. The capability was developed through a rigorous review process that included expert clinician and pharmacist assessment and structured testing against real-world medication questions.

UpToDate Expert AI, currently available only in the U.S., provides a governed approach to AI-assisted medication support that helps promote consistency, reduce uncontrolled variation, and align medication guidance with organizational quality, safety, and AI governance priorities.

According to Vernon Rayford, MD at North Mississippi Health Services, “Accessing dosing information through UpToDate Expert AI is fast and reliable. When needed, I am able to explore a full medication monograph to get more detailed information. But I can also get just a quick answer to a clinical dosing question. The underlying assumptions built into the system and ability to change those as needed based on my query was also very helpful and saved me valuable time.”

Meeting the needs of clinicians and health systems

UpToDate Enterprise Edition is designed to support both individual clinicians at the point of care and the enterprise priorities of healthcare systems. In addition to supporting AI queries by clinicians, it gives organizations visibility into clinical usage analytics to inform better decisions, integrates patient education content into care workflows including Epic MyChart, supports CME accrual and analytics and connects with leading ambient and other AI-powered solutions already shaping clinical practice.
