U. S. Steel Powers Minnesota Economy with Jobs, Local Investment, and Community Impact

$2.5 Billion Annual Impact Supports More Than 6,800 Total Jobs Across the State

MOUNTAIN IRON & KEEWATIN, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--United States Steel Corporation (“U. S. Steel”) today released the findings of its latest economic impact report for Minnesota, demonstrating the company’s significant and growing role in advancing the state’s economy, workforce, and Iron Range communities. The analysis, conducted by Parker Strategy Group, shows that in Fiscal Year 2024, U. S. Steel generated $2.5 billion in total economic impact, supported 6,873 jobs statewide, and contributed $153.7 million in total tax revenues across local and state levels.

For more than a century, U. S. Steel has been an integral part of Minnesota’s industrial and economic landscape. The company’s Minnesota Ore Operations — Minntac in Mountain Iron and Keetac in Keewatin — form the foundation of the Iron Range economy, providing thousands of good-paying jobs and sustaining hundreds of local suppliers. Today, U. S. Steel continues to power the region’s growth while investing in sustainability, innovation, and community partnerships.

“Minnesota’s Iron Range has long been a cornerstone of U. S. Steel’s strength,” said David B. Burritt, President and Chief Executive Officer of U. S. Steel. “This report reflects our $2.5 billion impact across the state and demonstrates our deep, continued commitment to supporting high-quality jobs, local suppliers, and sustainable growth for generations to come.”

Minnesota Impact by the Numbers (FY2024)

  • $2.5 billion total economic impact (+38.9% since FY2022)
  • $922.7 million value added to Minnesota’s economy
  • 6,873 total jobs supported and sustained statewide, including 1,936 direct employees
  • $153.7 million in total tax revenues generated across state and local government, including $59.9 million in taconite production taxes reinvested locally
  • 462 Minnesota-based suppliers engaged, strengthening regional supply chains and businesses
  • $1.8 million in community impact, including corporate giving, employee volunteerism, and local partnerships

Beyond its economic contributions, U. S. Steel continues to invest in communities across northern Minnesota. In 2024, the company and its employees supported schools, first responders, and workforce training initiatives while partnering with local chambers of commerce and small businesses to strengthen Iron Range communities.

“Northern Minnesota is not a highly populated area, so having access to approximately 1,900 well-paying jobs makes clear how valuable U. S. Steel is to our regional economy,” said State Senator Rob Farnsworth (R-District 7). “These jobs provide families with stability, opportunity, and the ability to build their lives right here at home.”

U. S. Steel’s presence on the Iron Range extends far beyond the mine gates. Generations of employees have built their careers and raised their families around Minntac and Keetac, creating deep community roots and a shared pride in the work that sustains the region. That local connection is something the company’s leaders see and celebrate every day.

“At Minntac, we take great pride in the role we play powering Minnesota’s economy and providing opportunities for families across the Iron Range,” said John Gordon, Senior Vice President, Raw Materials and Sustainable Resources, U. S. Steel. “Our team members are deeply rooted in this region—they’re our neighbors, friends, and community leaders. The work we do every day helps build stronger communities and a more sustainable future for Minnesota’s next generation.”

Looking ahead, U. S. Steel is poised for continued growth through its partnership with Nippon Steel Corporation, completed in 2025. This strategic alliance will create one of the world’s leading steelmakers, strengthen American manufacturing, and accelerate investment in sustainable steelmaking that benefits Minnesota and beyond.

The study highlights a point-in-time snapshot of U. S. Steel’s impact in Minnesota. Generations of Iron Range workers have built their livelihoods through the company’s operations, and its influence continues to shape both the regional and state economy.

“This analysis shows just how deeply U. S. Steel shapes Minnesota’s economy and communities — supporting 6,873 jobs, investing in more than 460 Minnesota-based suppliers, and generating millions in tax revenue that fund schools, infrastructure, and essential services,” said Nichole Parker, Managing Principal of Parker Strategy Group.
