FiRa Consortium to Integrate IEEE 802.15.4ab Advancements Into Future FiRa Specifications

Enhancements to boost UWB range, reliability, and data performance

BEAVERTON, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The FiRa® Consortium is launching a new initiative to update its specifications to incorporate new features being introduced in the forthcoming IEEE 802.15.4ab standard. These enhancements are expected to further strengthen ultra-wideband (UWB) capabilities, improving performance for precise and secure ranging and positioning across a variety of use cases, as well as adding sensing capabilities.

FiRa started the development of IEEE 802.15.4ab features in their specifications, building upon FiRa’s existing IEEE 802.15.4z features to ensure backward compatibility with enhanced ranging-capable devices.

In addition, FiRa plans to actively engage with other organizations advancing UWB technology to promote interoperability and ensure a cohesive, industry-wide approach to innovation. This collaboration supports the development of a robust UWB ecosystem, accelerating real-world deployment and adoption.

“The 802.15.4ab standard introduces important advancements that will help drive the next wave of FiRa adoption,” said SK Yong, Board Chair of the FiRa Consortium. “By ensuring our specifications align with these developments, FiRa continues to support performance, reliability, and interoperability for a growing range of applications.”
