New Clinical Trial Explores Hydrogen Water as a Complement to Psychological Treatment

SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Echo is spotlighting peer-reviewed research that explores how hydrogen-rich water may complement traditional psychological care. The study, published in Health Psychology Research, investigated the combined effects of hydrogen water and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in women diagnosed with panic disorder, a condition often accompanied by anxiety, depression, and stress.

New peer-reviewed study: Adding hydrogen-rich water to 12 weeks of CBT for panic disorder delivered extra benefits—fewer physical complaints and bigger drops in inflammation markers vs. placebo. Early data; adjunct, not a replacement.

In this study, 25 women with panic disorder took part in a 12-week program of CBT, a well-established treatment for anxiety-related conditions. To see if hydrogen water could provide additional benefits, half of the participants also drank 1.5 liters of hydrogen-rich water each day, while the others drank placebo water. Throughout the trial, researchers tracked changes in mental health symptoms, physical wellbeing, and biological markers linked to stress and inflammation.

CBT alone helped both groups, leading to clear improvements in anxiety, depression, stress levels, and cortisol. But the women who also drank hydrogen water showed extra benefits by reporting fewer physical health complaints and less body pain with lab tests, revealing stronger reductions in inflammation. The findings showed that hydrogen water can play a supportive role in improving the biological factors tied to mental health.

“These findings suggest that hydrogen water may work alongside established therapies like CBT, not as a replacement, but as a supportive tool for holistic health,” said Sarah Taylor, lead researcher for Echo. “By reducing inflammation and improving physical wellbeing, hydrogen water could help create a stronger foundation for lasting psychological recovery.”

The study emphasized that these results are preliminary and longer-term trials are needed. Still, the research highlights hydrogen water’s potential to contribute to integrative approaches for stress-related conditions.

“Our mission at Echo is to support people in living healthier, more balanced lives, and this research adds another layer of possibility to what hydrogen health can offer,” added Josh Carr, CEO of Echo.
