Cemvita and REMA Partner in Florianópolis to Create a Platform for Carbon Waste as Feedstock for Industrial Biotech

FLORIANÓPOLIS, Brazil--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cemvita, a leader in industrial biotechnology, is pleased to announce a strategic collaboration with REMA, a renowned Brazilian research institution based in Florianópolis (research center affiliated with the Federal University of Santa Catarina / UFSC, develops environmental and technological solutions for complex challenges in the industrial and agricultural sectors with multidisciplinary team works across Environmental Engineering, Automation, Chemical Engineering, Agronomy, and Biotechnology, delivering innovative, cost-effective, and efficient solutions). This partnership aims to enhance Cemvita’s platform for evaluating and testing various carbon waste streams as feedstocks for producing sustainable oil, reinforcing both organizations’ commitment to advancing the circular bioeconomy.

“Partnering with REMA in Florianópolis represents a significant step forward in our mission to transform carbon waste into valuable resources,” said Tara Karimi, Chief Science & Sustainability Officer of Cemvita.

This collaboration builds upon Cemvita’s recent initiatives in Brazil. In 2024, Cemvita expanded its operations to the country, establishing a subsidiary to contribute to sustainable energy solutions and capitalize on Brazil’s progressive regulatory framework, including the “Fuel of the Future” Law enacted in 2024. This law promotes biodiesel blending and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) adoption, aligning with Cemvita’s mission to transform waste into valuable resources.

Furthermore, Cemvita’s partnership with Be8, announced in January 2025, focuses on converting glycerin—a byproduct of biodiesel production—into low-carbon feedstock for SAF. This initiative exemplifies Cemvita’s dedication to developing innovative solutions that support the decarbonization of the aviation sector.

Utilizing waste as a feedstock is crucial for a sustainable future. By repurposing carbon waste streams, Cemvita’s technology reduces reliance on fossil resources, minimizes environmental impact, and contributes to a circular economy where waste is transformed into valuable products. This approach not only addresses waste management challenges but also supports the production of sustainable biofuels and chemicals.

Brazil’s leadership in the circular bioeconomy is further highlighted by its role as the host of COP30, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, in November 2025. This event underscores the country’s commitment to sustainable development and positions Brazil as a global hub for bioeconomic innovation. Cemvita’s collaborations within Brazil align with these national efforts, fostering advancements in sustainable technologies and contributing to global climate goals.

"Professors Dr. Marcio Schneider and Dr. Admir Giachini from REMA and I have worked together for over two decades with a track record of publications and significant contributions to the scientific community. This longstanding partnership reflects not only our strong professional ties but also our shared commitment to advancing science and technology for a more sustainable future," said Dr. Marcio Busi da Silva, Cemvita's CTO.

Partnering with REMA in Florianópolis represents a significant step forward in our mission to transform carbon waste into valuable resources,” said Tara Karimi, Chief Science & Sustainability Officer of Cemvita. “Together, we will enhance our platform’s capabilities, leveraging REMA’s expertise to evaluate and utilize diverse waste streams for sustainable oil production, further advancing the circular bioeconomy in Brazil and beyond.
