Wilmington Now Powered by Metronet’s Ultrafast Fiber-Optic Internet

$30 Million Private Investment in the City’s Telecommunications Infrastructure

EVANSVILLE, Ind.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Metronet, recognized as the “Fastest ISP in the Country” by PCMag for two consecutive years, today announced that it has officially launched its 100% fiber-optic internet in Wilmington, North Carolina. Residents in initial construction areas can sign up now for ultra-high-speed fiber-optic service of up to five gigabits per second, while businesses in initial construction areas can access speeds of up to ten gigabits per second.

Metronet began constructing its $30 million privately funded fiber-optic network in Wilmington in the summer of 2024. As the project progresses, Metronet’s multigigabit internet service will become available to Wilmington residents and businesses, neighborhood by neighborhood.

“Fiber-optic internet is truly the fastest, most reliable way to work, stream, and learn,” said Kris Smith, vice president of city relations at Metronet. “As we connect our first Wilmington customers to Metronet’s 100% fiber-optic speeds, we look forward to supporting citywide opportunities and business growth. We are eager for more residents and businesses to experience our blazing-fast speeds and superior customer service as we welcome Wilmington to the Metronet family.”

Metronet’s fiber-optic network provides symmetrical upload and download speeds, ensuring seamless video conferencing, streaming, gaming and more. Interested customers can visit metronet.com/nc/wilmington to sign up for service installation.

Wilmington residents will continue to see Metronet trucks as construction crews move from neighborhood to neighborhood. Residents will receive communication by mail about construction activity in their neighborhood 30 days prior to the start date. Additional notifications, such as yard signs and larger signs at the entrances to neighborhoods, will also inform residents of upcoming construction. Metronet crews will be identifiable by ID tags and branded vehicles.

Metronet plans to hire local market positions in sales and service technicians to support the Wilmington area. Those interested in joining the Metronet team can visit metronet.com/careers to search available positions and apply.
