Baron & Budd Announces Spring 2024 Mesothelioma Cancer Victims Memorial Scholarship Winner

Scholarship winner Avery Gray shared her personal experience dealing with pediatric cancer and how it has influenced her outlook on life

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, the national law firm Baron & Budd announced that it has selected Avery Gray as the winner of the Mesothelioma Cancer Victims Memorial Scholarship. She will receive a $2,500 scholarship paid directly to the financial aid account at her university.

Applicants were asked to submit a written or video essay about how cancer has impacted their lives. Avery Gray’s winning written essay was selected after a competitive review by the Baron & Budd Scholarship committee. Her moving essay outlined her experience of receiving a cancer diagnosis as a child, the lasting effects of the treatments, and the life lessons she learned throughout the journey.

Gray explained how the health challenges she faced influenced her career path and heightened her empathy and compassion toward others. Through her experience, she discovered a passion for medical care and plans to go to school to become a pediatrician. In her essay, Gray wrote about her interactions with healthcare workers, “The medical providers I encountered when I was ill ignited my passion for a higher medical education, and my zeal for helping those in need keeps the flame burning.” Gray is starting her first year at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor where she will be majoring in Biochemistry.

“Avery’s enthusiasm for helping others and her personal experience with cancer will undoubtedly benefit her as she pursues a career in the medical field. We are proud to help support her education and wish her the best in all of her future endeavors,” said President and Managing Shareholder Russell Budd.

The Mesothelioma Cancer Victims Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the legacy of the thousands of Americans who are diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer every year.
