Dr. Evan Schoenberg Becomes The First Doctor In Georgia to Implant the IC-8® Apthera™ IOL

The First and Only Small Aperture Lens for Cataract Surgery

ATLANTA--()--Georgia Eye Partners is proud to share that Dr. Evan Schoenberg has become the first eye surgeon in the Atlanta metro area to implant the Apthera IOL, the first and only small aperture lens for cataract surgery.

“Expanded range of vision via Apthera is a huge deal, especially for patients who have enjoyed monovision in the past but want a modern, more flexible approach.” said Dr. Evan D. Schoenberg, Director of Refractive Surgery at Georgia Eye Partners. “Additionally, the small aperture can be very helpful in achieving good vision in the face of concurrent eye problems like previous radial keratotomy surgery and keratoconus.”

Cataracts are commonly treated through surgery, where the cloudy natural lens is replaced with an artificial lens called an IOL. Some patients receive a monofocal IOL, which provides clear distance vision but leaves objects up close blurry. Other available presbyopia-correcting lens designs have complex optics that split, shift, or stretch light to provide clear vision at more than one discrete focal point, which may not be ideal depending on the eye and the patient’s tolerance of glare. The Apthera extended depth of focus IOL uses proprietary small aperture technology to filter out peripheral defocused light, allowing only focused light to reach the retina. Even patients with an astigmatism of 1.5D can achieve continuous range of vision from far through intermediate and near vision.

The Apthera IOL is intended for use in just one eye and is paired with a monofocal or monofocal toric (astigmatism-correcting) IOL in the fellow eye. The combination is customized based on an indvidual’s visual and lifestyle needs to help patients achieve their personal best vision.

Georgia Eye Partners remains committed to serving the growing aging population throughout Greater Atlanta and Georgia by implementing the latest and greatest advanced cataract surgery technologies and procedures. By 2050, the National Eye Institute anticipates the number of people with cataracts throughout the U.S. to double from 24.4 million to 50 million.
