Triple-I Joining Aug. 24 LinkedIn Audio Panel on Disaster Preparedness

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In the midst of what’s expected to be an “above-average” 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I) is participating in a live LinkedIn Audio event on disaster preparedness on Thursday, Aug. 24, at 11:30 a.m., EDT.

Ahead of the Storm: Disaster Prep and Recovery Chat for Small Businesses will be moderated by Armand Broady, host of the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety’s (IBHS) Disaster Discussions podcast. Broady will be joined by three subject matter experts in the fields of building science, disaster preparedness, emergency management, and insurance:

  • Chuck Miccolis, IBHS, Managing Director, Commercial Lines
  • Francisco Sanchez Jr., U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Office of Disaster Recovery & Resilience (ODR&R), Associate Administrator
  • Loretta Worters, Triple-I, Vice President, Media Relations

The program’s focus will be on what small business owners should do to prepare their employees and properties for severe weather, what insurance coverage they ought to have, and what role the federal government can play in building resilience and speeding recovery in the wake of a natural disaster.

Five named storms have already formed in 2023, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Atlantic hurricane season, which began on June 1 and continues through Nov. 30, produced on average 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes, which are defined as storms with sustained wind speeds of Category 3 or higher, between 1991 and 2020.

This year has already been an extraordinary one for natural disasters in the U.S. Before this month’s deadly wildfires in Hawaii, the continental U.S. experienced a record number of tornadoes through June 30, with several of them causing extensive property damage and fatalities across numerous Midwest and Southern states. According to NOAA, through Aug. 8, there have been 15 U.S. weather/climate disaster events this year with losses exceeding $1 billion each.

The LinkedIn Audio Event will be held only days before the start of National Preparedness Month. It is marked each September by the federal government to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies. The Ready.gov website contains content aimed specifically at preparedness planning for businesses.
