Dorsey Partner Kent Schmidt Publishes Comprehensive Litigation Risks Book

COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dorsey Partner Kent Schmidt has authored his first book on business litigation risks: Avoiding and Managing US Business Litigation Risks: A Comprehensive Guide for Business Owners and Attorneys Who Advise Them.

The book addresses why companies are frequently sued in the United States, along with how these business litigation liabilities might be avoided through preventative measures. Written for a diverse audience, the book is primarily intended for attorneys who may find it useful as a desk-reference, as well as any lawyer or non-lawyer whose responsibilities include managing US litigation risks.

Kent presents a framework for what he calls the “5 Cs” of commercial litigation risks, the categories for the most common commercial lawsuits against businesses. He then provides checklists, strategies and practical steps that management might consider and implement to materially reduce the risk of these types of lawsuits.

The author draws on two decades of experience defending companies throughout the US to apply a “lessons-learned” approach, examining how corporate defendants can avoid claims by developing and enhancing their litigation risk profile.

The 457-page book is available in paperback or ebook from Globe Law and Business.

Dorsey Partner and firm-wide Trial Group Co-Head Michael Keyes, commented: “This substantial work demonstrates that trial lawyers can not only fight in the trenches, helping clients out of litigation jams, but use insights from those courtroom battles to provide practical advice on how to avoid litigation by not making unforced errors. Kent has produced a valuable resource that will benefit many companies.”

Kent Schmidt is a partner at the international law firm of Dorsey & Whitney LLP, and is based in California. His practice includes virtually all types of business litigation, with an emphasis on unfair business practices, trade secret litigation, consumer class actions, product liability, securities litigation and enforcement, commercial disputes, and environmental claims. Having spent his entire legal career at Dorsey, Kent often collaborates with partners in other offices around the world. Besides his commercial litigation practice, Kent speaks to and advises companies on how to avoid litigation claims, develop compliance policies and strategies, and conduct internal investigations.
