Dr. Stephen Taylor Appears as Guest in Lauren Sisler Documentary, "Beyond the Shadows"

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Pathway Healthcare (www.pathwayhealthcare.com) is pleased to announce that its Chief Medical Officer - Behavioral Health Division, Dr. Stephen Taylor, teamed up recently with ESPN and AL.com sports reporter Lauren Sisler in her recently released short documentary, “Beyond the Shadows.” While in college in 2003, Lauren received a phone call from her father she never expected—her mother had died of a fentanyl drug overdose. Just hours later, she received word from her uncle that her father had also died of a fentanyl drug overdose. This news was a shock to Lauren and her family. She, along with her family, had witnessed her parents suffer from chronic pain without fully realizing the toll long-term use of pain medicine takes on a person’s mind and body.

In the documentary, not only did Lauren talk about her family and what she has experienced since the death of her parents, but she also brought in Dr. Stephen Taylor, who not only works with Pathway Healthcare, but is also the Medical Director for the NBA Player Assistance/Anti-Drug Program to contribute to the discussion with JOX 94.5 FM’s Jim Dunaway acting as the moderator.

Lauren’s goal, which aligns with the goal of Pathway Healthcare, is to help break the stigma of addiction through education and help people. Dr. Taylor said during the discussion, “Addiction is a treatable, chronic medical disease that affects good people. Addiction happens to people; nobody wants this illness. The good news is that there is help. Addiction is treatable. Help is available. If you see someone struggling with addiction, reach out. If you need help, get help.”

Pathway Healthcare takes a whole approach to diagnose and treat addiction and mental health disease. “We have professional psychiatrists, addiction specialists, peer recovery specialists, and licensed counselors who work with each of our patients to create individualized treatment plans for addiction and mental health needs. We use medication-assisted treatment coupled with counseling to help people find their normal, feel better, understand the disease of addiction and mental health, and find hope and healing,” says Chief Executive Officer, Scott Olson. “We are not just a phone-a-friend buddy. We have people and plans in place to treat the disease with evidence-based care for people battling opioid addiction, alcohol dependency, recreational drug dependency, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and bipolar issues. The need is real because there is a waiting list of six months for psychiatric care right now. We have designed a program which enables us to help people now, not in six months, when it might be too late.”
