Partnership to Improve Safety on America’s Roads Expands

MITRE, the Auto Manufacturers, and the Federal Government Share Data to Advance Traffic Safety

BEDFORD, Mass. & MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, a partnership dedicated to the advancement of traffic safety launched the next phase of the Partnership for Analytics Research in Traffic Safety (PARTS). The group, made up of public and private participants, including eight automakers, MITRE and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, works together to improve traffic safety in a data-sharing partnership by generating unique analytic results.

Subaru and Mazda are now participating in the program in addition to the original six automobile manufacturer participants: American Honda, FCA, General Motors, Mitsubishi Motors R&D of America, Nissan North America, and Toyota Motor North America. The expanded group represents approximately 70 percent of the U.S. market for 2019 sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

PARTS is significantly expanding its dataset beyond what was used in the initial PARTS pilot, during which a group of automobile manufacturers voluntarily shared safety data for the purpose of advancing safety. This study will include approximately 40 million vehicles — more than 90 different vehicle models from 2015 to 2021. The study will analyze the effectiveness of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) systems and lane management systems. Results will provide real-world insights into safety benefits and emerging safety opportunities of ADAS today – and Automated Driving Systems (ADS) in the future – that can improve the performance of advanced safety technologies.

We all want to cooperate and lay groundwork needed for our autonomous future, and believe that adapting the ASIAS (aviation) model is the best way to shape and benefit from a collaborative safety analysis.”
