Private Photo-Sharing App FamilyAlbum Surpasses 8 Million Users

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--mixi, Inc. today announced that its private photo-sharing app FamilyAlbum has surpassed 8 million users worldwide.

FamilyAlbum is a free, all-in-one resource for parents to share photos and videos of their children in a secure, invite-only album. With unlimited storage, users can upload as many photos and videos as they like. The award-winning app also includes special features to make communicating with the entire family easy and fun.

Released in 2015, FamilyAlbum continues to grow as it supports the journeys of families everywhere. The app is available in English (American and British), French, German, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean. It has over 8 million users in more than 150 different countries worldwide.

Recently, FamilyAlbum has seen increasing demand for its service as families struggle to stay connected in the midst of a pandemic. In addition to surpassing 8 million users, the service has also seen an unprecedented increase in in-app activity since the middle of March. The number of comments posted to the app in July was almost double that of January, and the number of monthly photo and video uploads has grown to over 120 million. Parent users are more active than ever, with 70% using FamilyAlbum at least once a week.

“At FamilyAlbum, we’re really proud to be able to say that we’re supporting families with our service, and we’re constantly working on improvements with that in mind,” said FamilyAlbum founder Kenji Kasahara. “At the same time, we’ve also been thinking about how we can support those outside of the FamilyAlbum community. As the FamilyAlbum community continues to grow, our team remains focused on how we can positively impact the lives of families and children everywhere.”

In April, mixi announced that Kenji had donated $1 million towards COVID-19 relief for families and children. Recipients included DonorsChoose, GiveDirectly, Save the Children, and other organizations providing housing, meals, counseling, holistic support, diapers, and other necessities to families and children experiencing homelessness, serious illness (including sick or premature babies in neonatal care), financial difficulty, or family violence.
