MIAMI & DALLAS--()--Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits (“Southern Glazer’s”)—the world's pre-eminent distributor of beverage alcohol—announced today that it is expanding its high school alcohol safety education program after three successful years of implementation. Through the Company’s Youth Alcohol Awareness and Education Foundation, Inc.— established to fund programs that support alcohol safety and underage drinking prevention —Southern Glazer’s has brought the AlcoholEdu® for High School alcohol safety education course by EVERFI to more than 10,000 students across more than 100 high school students in Miami-Dade and Broward counties in Florida, as well as Dallas and Collin counties in Texas, since the kickoff of the program in 2017. The Company is now renewing the program in these markets for the next three years, and expanding the offering to schools in six counties in New York – Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, and Richmond.

In this most recent 2019-2020 school year, more than 7,300 students across 57 schools in South Florida and Dallas completed the course, experiencing significant knowledge gains along with corresponding positive shifts in attitudes and behaviors. Feedback from participating students in this past school year’s program includes:

  • "The most important aspect of AlcoholEdu is that it helped me become more aware of people's movements and behaviors while drinking and the warning signs of alcohol use." - Student, Texas
  • "The most important thing I learned during AlcoholEdu is how to react to peer pressure to drink alcohol. Knowing the proper responses to peer pressure can help me avoid uncomfortable or even dangerous situations in the future." - Student, Florida

Made available at no charge to educators in public and private high schools, AlcoholEdu® for High School is a 90-minute, interactive course that engages students with science-based alcohol education and interactive exercises, providing an individualized experience that changes perceptions, motivates behavior change, and supports healthier decisions regarding alcohol. The digital program, developed by leading social impact education innovator EVERFI, is proven to reduce negative consequences associated with underage drinking. Topics covered include peer pressure, effects of alcohol on the brain and body, bystander behavior, and goal setting. Through pre- and post-course assessments and surveys, students are measured on knowledge gains as well as shifts in behavior, attitudes, and habits around alcohol safety.

Teachers, guidance counselors, and school administrators who are interested in implementing this program for the 2020-2021 school year in one of the following locations should contact Briana Nistler (bnistler@everfi.com): Miami-Dade and Broward counties in Florida; Dallas County in Texas; or Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, or Richmond counties in New York.
