Nonprofit Stupid Cancer Offers Lifeline to Young Adult Cancer Community Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Ahead of AYA Awareness Week, Organization Pledges Support and Resources

NEW YORK--()--Stupid Cancer, a 501(c)3 nonprofit leader in the young adult cancer movement, announced plans to provide additional support to the adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer community amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Nationally, April 6-10, 2020 is recognized as AYA Cancer Awareness Week to place an important spotlight on the unique needs faced by 15–39-year-olds impacted by cancer. Not only is cancer the number one disease killer in AYAs, this severely underserved demographic faces additional challenges – including financial distress, concerns surrounding fertility, isolation and loneliness – due to their cancer occurring during a crucial stage of personal and social development. That's where Stupid Cancer steps in and this year is emphasizing support for this underserved community in the face of this global health crisis.

“It goes without saying that this is a difficult time for so many of us as we navigate this ‘new normal,’” explains Alison Silberman, CEO of Stupid Cancer. “All of us at Stupid Cancer HQ are here to support the AYA cancer community through these challenging times, and continue our commitment to end isolation.”

Stupid Cancer is actively providing online support through webinars hosted by social well-being and public health experts to address questions and concerns surrounding COVID-19 and how to cope with social isolation and fear, with upcoming programming focused on mindfulness, among other topics. Ahead of AYA week, CEO Alison Silberman asks the extended community to connect with Stupid Cancer HQ to voice concerns as well as inspiration and ideas on how the community can better connect, and with whom.

“With Spring around the corner,” Silberman continues, “we are hopeful that the new season will bring new opportunities for support. Each and every gift helps us serve those who need it most. Together, we will get through this.”

Every day of AYA week, Stupid Cancer will be posting information, programming, and ways to raise awareness and support. Follow Stupid Cancer (@StupidCancer) on social media for information on all scheduled activities including online meetups, live meditations, and writing workshops.

Stupid Cancer's mission is to empower young adults affected by cancer by ending isolation and building community. Through innovative programming and strategic communications platforms, the organization aims to provide support, resources, education, and a sense of community both online and in-person.
