Majority of Three Generations Are Open to Contingent Work in the Future, Finds a New Survey From Rose International

Top Reasons For Differences By Generation

ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The majority of three different generations express interest in being a contingent worker in the future, finds a new survey from Rose International, a leading staffing agency.

Fifty-three percent (53%) of Gen X, 62% of Millennials and 63% of Gen Z are very likely or somewhat likely to be contingent workers at some point in their career. One-third (33%) of Baby Boomers are also likely to do contingent work in the future.

The survey, conducted by ENGINE, found that reasons differ by generation. Gen X and Boomers are aligned with one another, stating that contingent work is a good way to re-enter the workforce (51% and 49%, respectively). Millennials feel learning new skills (61%) is the top benefit while Gen Z believes that more flexibility (53%) is the most important benefit.

“Gen X and Boomers are most affected by having to take time off from their careers, therefore it makes sense that re-entering the workforce is most important to them,” said Sue Bhatia, founder and chairwoman of Rose International. “Learning new skills is especially important to Millennials who view minternships or mid-career internships as a way to learn different skills and even switch careers. However, contingent work enables Millennials and others to learn new skills without starting over as an intern. Gen Z is just entering the workforce and, in general, flexibility is important to them since they want more control over how, where and when they work.”

Methodology

This report presents the findings of a CARAVAN survey conducted by ENGINE among a demographically representative U.S. sample of 1,004 adults, comprising 502 men and 502 women 18 years of age and older. This survey was live on December 2-4, 2019.
