KCC US Severe Convective Storm (SCS) Model Recognized by InsuranceERM

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Karen Clark & Company (KCC) is pleased to announce the company has won the “highly commended” designation in the Climate Risk Modelling Solution of the Year category of the 2026 InsuranceERM Global Climate Risk & Sustainability Awards for its Severe Convective Storm (SCS) model.

SCS risk has become one of the most significant challenges facing (re)insurers, accounting for over 60 percent of annual weather-related property claims. SCS average annual losses are twice those from hurricanes.

Accounting for climate change impacts on SCS activity is a complex challenge in atmospheric science. Unlike hurricanes, wildfires, and flooding, which are strongly linked to a small number of key climate variables, SCS is driven by numerous interacting atmospheric processes that vary across time and geography.

KCC’s physics-based SCS Model addresses this challenge by quantifying climate-related SCS risk using four-dimensional atmospheric modeling and capturing current climate conditions, rather than relying on historical data.

The KCC SCS Model ingests over 30 gigabytes of satellite, radar, and weather data each day, so it is continuously refined to current atmospheric conditions and emerging climate trends. This continuous flow of data has resulted in an archive of more than 100 terabytes of atmospheric information, providing KCC scientists with an unprecedented view of changing weather and climate conditions across the US.

“KCC’s model provides a scientifically grounded representation of SCS risk that remains current as climate conditions evolve,” said Karen Clark, CEO and Co-founder of KCC. “We are honored to receive this recognition, highlighting the KCC SCS model, which has become the gold standard in the industry for its accuracy and stability.”

This is the second consecutive year KCC has been recognized in the InsuranceERM Global Climate Risk & Sustainability Awards.
