NaphCare’s Electronic Health Record Receives Certification for Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Medications
Certification expands the ability of NaphCare’s Electronic Health Record – TechCare – to support the secure electronic prescribing of controlled medications.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--NaphCare, a leader in correctional healthcare, announced that TechCare, its corrections-specific electronic health record system, received Electronic Prescribing for Controlled Substances certification (“EPCS Certification”).
Certain medications have therapeutic value but are subject to abuse and are therefore tightly regulated as a result. Controlled medications, such as buprenorphine, are increasingly used to help reduce the suffering and risks associated with opioid withdrawal, and are increasingly used in corrections as part of Medication Assisted Treatment programs to help in the treatment of patients with opioid use disorder.
EPCS certification allows authorized prescribers and pharmacies to use certified software to electronically send and receive controlled-substance prescriptions. The certification significantly expands TechCare’s prescribing capabilities and supports more efficient communication between correctional healthcare providers and pharmacy partners.
As part of the certification process, TechCare was independently evaluated for compliance with federal EPCS requirements. The review assessed safeguards related to authorized user access, electronic prescription signing, recordkeeping, audit trails, and the accurate recording, storage, and transmission of required prescription information.
For correctional healthcare teams, electronic prescribing can help streamline communication between authorized prescribers and pharmacies, reduce reliance on paper-based processes and create a more consistent electronic record of prescription activity. These capabilities can also support medication coordination when patients receive care from multiple providers or transition between healthcare settings.
The certification reflects continued collaboration among NaphCare’s clinical, pharmacy, and technology teams. Because TechCare is developed and supported internally, these teams can work together to configure prescribing workflows, address operational needs, and improve the system based on feedback from healthcare professionals and correctional partners.
The EPCS certification is part of NaphCare’s continued investment in technology designed specifically for correctional healthcare. By expanding TechCare’s electronic prescribing capabilities, NaphCare is strengthening the connection between clinical decision-making, pharmacy services, and the technology healthcare professionals use to coordinate patient care.
