The award was established in 2016 to recognize industry leaders who embody the values of CANNEX co-founder Alex Melvin, who passed away in 2015. The award committee, which includes representatives from CAILBA (Canadian Association of Independent Life Brokerage Agencies), RDBA (Registered Deposit Brokers Association), Advocis (The Financial Advisors Association of Canada), the Melvin family, and past winners, is seeking nominations for the 2027 award.

“Alex believed the best leaders harness technology to empower consumers, increase transparency, and move the industry forward,” said Gord Mooney, chair of the 2027 Alexander S. Melvin Award Committee. “That belief is just as relevant today as it was throughout his career. As artificial intelligence reshapes our industry, this award recognizes leaders who embrace innovation while demonstrating the integrity, judgment, and ethical leadership needed to earn and maintain trust.”

Past award recipients include many respected leaders from across the financial services industry, most recently Phil Marsillo, CEO of IDC Worldsource Insurance Network. Previous honourees include David Newman of Fiscal Agents Savings and Investments, Terri Botosan of HUB Financial Inc., Gord Mooney of General Bank of Canada, and Dennis Craig of RBC Insurance.

“For more than a decade, this award has celebrated leaders whose ideas, integrity, and commitment to excellence have helped move our industry forward,” said Gary Baker, CEO of CANNEX, which underwrites the annual award. “We encourage nominations for leaders who are inspiring their organizations, advancing our industry, and demonstrating the values that will define the next generation of leadership.”

Nominations for the 2027 Alexander S. Melvin Award will be accepted through January 22, 2027. The recipient will be announced and recognized in Spring 2027. In recognition of their achievements and contributions to Canada's financial services industry, a donation will be made to the charity of their choice.

Companies or individuals may nominate leaders who have made a lasting impact on the industry through contributions to innovation, technology, entrepreneurial spirit, collaborative leadership and mentoring, and have made significant contributions to the industry through initiatives and new technologies, and the fostering of diversity of thought and culture.
