New Report Reveals the Most and Least Expensive U.S. Cities for Household Bills

The average U.S. household now spends more than $25k a year on essential bills; San Jose ranks most expensive at $44,947, Detroit least expensive at $20,125.

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--doxo today released its annual Top 50 U.S. Cities Household Spend Report, uncovering where Americans pay the most and the least for household bills. San Jose, California is the most expensive city in the country at $44,947 a year — more than twice what households pay in Detroit, the least expensive city at $20,125.

The report arrives as households continue to grapple with a heightened cost of living. Last month, the U.S. Conference of Mayors found that 92.9% of mayors surveyed said the cost of living in their city had worsened over the past year, with 95.5% naming housing costs the primary affordability concern.

Key findings:

  • National median: Americans spend $25,266 per year across the 13 essential household bills:
    • Mortgage; Rent; Auto Loan; Gas; Electric; Water & Sewer; Waste & Recycling;
    • Auto Insurance; Cable & Satellite; Health Insurance; Mobile Phone; Alarm & Security; and Life Insurance.
  • Most expensive city: San Jose, at $44,947 a year, 78% above the national median
  • Least expensive city: Detroit, at $20,125 a year, 20% below the national median

"Cost of living gets talked about as a single national number, but that's not how anyone experiences it. It's thirteen bills a month, and what they add up to depends enormously on where you live," said Steve Shivers, CEO and Co-founder at doxo. "That's why we publish this. The national figure doesn't tell you much. Your city does."
