Airgain Lighthouse Extends 5G Coverage in Challenging Southern California Residential Community

Field testing demonstrated improved performance across all five measured locations, including 140 Mbps where usable cellular data service was previously unavailable

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Airgain, Inc. (NASDAQ: AIRG), a leading provider of advanced wireless connectivity solutions, today announced successful field test results from a deployment of its Lighthouse™ 5G Intelligent Node with Velos Internet & Tech, a connectivity provider and Airgain systems integrator.

Lighthouse extended 5G coverage into hard-to-reach areas without requiring a new cellular site.

The system was deployed at a 687-home master-planned residential community spanning approximately 800 acres in Brea, California, to address areas of the property with weak or little usable cellular service.

Reliable cellular coverage is increasingly important to the community’s connected infrastructure. Velos has deployed 27 cloud-connected license plate recognition (LPR) cameras throughout the community and is helping transition portions of its water monitoring systems toward cellular connectivity. Improved coverage can also support remote video, alerts, infrastructure monitoring, and future applications such as access control, environmental sensors, and other IoT systems.

Field testing demonstrated improved cellular performance at all five measured locations, with test points ranging from approximately 650 to 2,600 feet from the Lighthouse installation. Two locations that previously had no usable data service gained measurable 5G connectivity following deployment. At one location where a speed test could not be completed prior to the installation, subsequent testing measured approximately 140 Mbps.

Velos selected Lighthouse to extend 5G coverage into hard-to-reach areas without building a new cellular site. Unlike traditional base stations and small cells that typically require wired backhaul, Lighthouse uses an existing cellular donor signal, reducing infrastructure requirements and deployment complexity in suitable environments.

The Brea deployment uses a T-Mobile n41 band configuration. Lighthouse is also available in a Verizon n77 band configuration, expanding the range of 5G coverage environments the platform can address.

Lighthouse’s compact infrastructure footprint and ability to operate from a remote, solar-powered location made the solution well suited for the site’s challenging hillside environment. Despite those conditions, the initial installation and commissioning were completed in less than a day and a half, including vegetation clearing, pole installation, antenna mounting and alignment, and installation of a standalone solar power system.

James Lara, President, Velos Internet & Tech, commented: “For this community, the goal is to create a reliable cellular layer that can support security, infrastructure monitoring, and other connected services across a challenging property. The throughput improvements have been very encouraging, and the deployment gives us confidence that Lighthouse can provide a repeatable approach for other locations facing similar coverage challenges.”

As a systems integrator working with Airgain, Velos can incorporate Lighthouse into broader customer connectivity solutions and manage deployments for end customers.

“The Brea deployment demonstrates Lighthouse’s ability to solve a real-world coverage challenge and deliver meaningful performance improvements in areas where cellular service was previously limited or unavailable,” said Jacob Suen, President and CEO of Airgain. “Combined with a partner-led deployment model, these results demonstrate the potential to replicate this approach across residential communities, campuses, municipalities, enterprises and other locations facing similar connectivity challenges.”

Lighthouse is Airgain’s 5G Intelligent Node, designed to extend existing cellular coverage into hard-to-reach indoor and outdoor areas. Because the solution function uses an existing donor signal without requiring new wired cellular backhaul, it can reduce deployment complexity in suitable environments.

Velos also sees opportunities to apply the Lighthouse deployment model to other communities, campuses, municipal environments, remote properties, and other locations with similar coverage challenges.
