Abridge Announces Enterprise-Wide Agreement to Expand AI-Enabled Care Across The University of Texas System
Agreement expands access to Abridge’s clinician intelligence platform across one of the nation’s largest academic health systems
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Abridge today announced an enterprise-wide agreement with University of Texas REAL Health AI to expand access to Abridge’s clinician intelligence platform across the UT System. The agreement provides a systemwide framework through which UT health institutions can access Abridge while preserving local decision-making and supporting responsible implementation of purpose-built AI for healthcare.
The combined efforts of UT Health owned and affiliated hospitals and clinics provided nearly 11.7 million outpatient visits and more than 2 million hospital days in the last year. The system includes UT Southwestern Medical Center, UT Medical Branch, UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, UT Dell Medical School, UT Health Tyler, UTHealth Houston, UT Health San Antonio, and UT Health Rio Grande Valley.
“This partnership represents a shared conviction about what healthcare delivery looks like when designed intentionally as an integrated system,” said Peter McCaffrey, MD, Chair, UT REAL Health AI and Vice President, Chief Digital and AI Officer at UT Medical Branch. “We are focused not only on expanding clinician access to ambient AI to strip away the mental clutter of clerical overhead, but equally on returning that focused, human presence back to patients at the bedside.”
Abridge’s platform is designed to support clinicians before, during, and after every patient conversation—from drafting clinical documentation to surfacing context-aware clinical insights—with the mission of improving the experience and outcomes of care for every patient.
This year, Abridge will support more than 100 million patient-clinician conversations across more than 300 of the largest and most complex health systems in the U.S.
The agreement establishes a systemwide framework through which UT health institutions can access Abridge, while enabling local decision-making, innovation, real-world testing, and continued development of new clinical and operational use cases.
UT REAL Health AI was established through legislative support and state funding in 2025 to advance responsible AI adoption in healthcare. That same year, Abridge launched a pilot with UT’s Health Systems which has included clinicians at five geographic locations across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency department settings and more than 50 specialties.
“AI creates value in healthcare when it is embedded naturally into clinical workflows and helps clinicians focus their time and attention where it matters most,” said Edward Sankary, MD, FACP, FAMIA, Vice President and Chief Health Information and Value Officer at UT Health San Antonio. “Our experience with Abridge demonstrates what is possible when these tools become part of everyday care, are specialty tailored, context-grounded and assist clinicians throughout the patient visit from pre-visit preparation to intelligent encounter support and end-of-visit assistance including coding specificity. This partnership gives us an opportunity to scale those benefits responsibly across the UT System.”
Adoption has increased significantly, with the pilot growing 73% in recording clinicians and 80% in monthly notes over the last 12 months, contributing to the expansion of Abridge availability enterprise-wide.
“True technological transformation in healthcare requires trust, workflow integration, and scale,” said Shiv Rao, MD, CEO and Co-Founder of Abridge and a practicing cardiologist. “Through UT REAL Health AI, the UT System has the vision to define what that future can look like, and It is an incredible privilege to partner systemwide to improve the lives of Texans.”
The agreement builds on existing momentum around Abridge’s core platform and clinical intelligence Assistant and creates a foundation for potential future work across areas including surfacing care gaps, streamlining payer administrative workflows, and supporting clinical trial matching.
Abridge Assistant provides context-aware clinical decision support capabilities within existing Abridge workflows. Because access is provisioned by the organization rather than claimed by an individual clinician, the Assistant can be securely connected to the longitudinal patient record, drawing from the patient chart, ongoing conversation, and the most highly cited and widely read peer-reviewed medical sources to surface insights to clinicians.
A systemwide approach can enable UT institutions to learn from one another, share implementation experience, and accelerate the spread of effective practices across diverse clinical environments.
The enterprise framework is designed to pair systemwide access with campus-level implementation and innovation across a large, complex healthcare ecosystem.
About UT REAL Health AI
