Xcel Energy Gives Back During Its 16th Annual Day of Service

2,200 volunteers working 100+ service projects provides lasting community impact

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Volunteers from Xcel Energy and the communities it serves took action to support nonprofit organizations across the state during the company’s 16th annual Day of Service in September.

More than 2,200 volunteers dedicated more than 7,400 hours to support 109 projects that ranged from packing meals and gardening to cleaning up our parks and riversides and maintaining camps and community spaces for our children. Volunteer efforts this year generated more than $260,000 in economic impact across communities in all eight states the company serves: Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin.

Over the past five years, Xcel Energy has supported nearly 600 Day of Service projects across its service territory, with nearly 13,000 volunteers and an estimated cumulative community economic impact of nearly $1.5 million.

“At Xcel Energy, we’re focused on making energy work better for our customers, and that means showing up for our communities in ways that extend beyond the energy we deliver every day,” said Bob Frenzel, chairman, president and CEO of Xcel Energy. “On our annual Day of Service, our employees put that commitment into action, working side by side with nonprofit partners and other community members to support the people and places we serve. That's a legacy we're proud to build upon as we celebrate 25 years of the Xcel Energy Foundation.”

Highlights from Day of Service by region:

  • Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota: Over 1,000 volunteers dedicated nearly 3,200 hours, across 47 projects. This included assembling laundry kits and preparing dorms for those experiencing homelessness, packing school supplies for under-resourced schools and assembling backpacks with food to feed students in need.
  • Wisconsin and Michigan: Nearly 200 volunteers contributed more than 800 hours, across 10 projects.
  • Colorado: Over 800 volunteers dedicated 2,750 hours, across 44 projects.
  • Texas and New Mexico: More than 130 volunteers contributed 675 hours, across eight projects.

Day of Service began in 2010 as a tribute to the victims, survivors and first responders of 9/11, as well as all those who work to keep our communities and country safe. The annual event brings together Xcel Energy employees, customers and community partners to support local nonprofits and projects that strengthen the communities we serve.

As the Xcel Energy Foundation celebrates its 25th anniversary, Day of Service reflects a longstanding commitment to giving back. For more than a century, Xcel Energy and its community partners have worked to make a positive local impact, and since 2001, the Foundation has invested nearly $160 million in nonprofits across our service territory. Together with the time, talent and generosity of employees and retirees, those investments help build stronger, more vibrant communities.
