Nearly 7 in 10 Americans Would Let AI Complete Certain Financial Tasks, TD Survey Finds

Nearly half have used AI to inform a personal financial decision, yet 83% of those users still verify its guidance with another source or professional.

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Consumers are open to using artificial intelligence for more than financial information and guidance. A new TD Bank U.S. survey finds that 69% would allow a bank-provided AI assistant to complete at least one financial task on their behalf, highlighting consumers’ willingness to let AI play a more active role in everyday banking.

The findings build on TD research released earlier this year, which found that 48% of Americans were interested in an AI-powered banking assistant to help with tasks such as paying bills, setting alerts and transferring money. The latest survey explores the next step: which tasks consumers would allow AI to complete on their behalf.

Consumers are also turning to AI for financial information and guidance. Nearly half (49%) used an AI assistant in the past year to research or make a personal financial decision. Among those users, 83% verified the information with another source or professional, suggesting consumers see AI as a useful resource, but not a substitute for human judgment.

"AI is giving consumers new ways to understand their options and navigate financial decisions,” said Ted Paris, Head of Analytics, Intelligence & AI, TD Bank U.S. “As adoption grows, consumers are also drawing clear lines around where AI can help and where human judgment remains essential. For banks, the opportunity is to pair AI’s speed and capabilities with the oversight, accountability and relationships customers expect."

Consumers want AI to make everyday finances easier

Consumers were most willing to allow an AI assistant to alert them to potentially better products or rates (38%), help them avoid overdraft charges (31%) and pay recurring bills (27%). The results indicate that consumers are most open to AI helping with defined, practical tasks that make everyday banking easier.

Fraud protection also emerged as a compelling use case. Sixty-eight percent are comfortable with banks using AI to detect potential fraud and send alerts, while 50% expressed trust in the use of AI-powered technology to help protect their money and financial information from fraud and cyber threats. The findings suggest consumers are open to AI supporting fraud protection when it is paired with human expertise and accountability.

Trust depends on human oversight and responsible design

Human oversight was the leading factor in building consumer confidence in a bank’s use of AI. Thirty-six percent cited human review of important financial decisions as a key safeguard. Another 31% each pointed to the ability to reach a person, strong privacy and data-security protections, and clear accountability if something goes wrong. Clear explanations of when and how AI is used were cited by 25%.

"Consumers are open to AI when it makes banking easier, but trust depends on how the technology is designed and governed,” said Kiran Vuppu, U.S. Chief Information Officer, TD. “As AI takes on a greater role, strong oversight, clear accountability and human involvement will remain essential to delivering better experiences and outcomes for customers.”

Together, the findings reinforce a human-led, AI-enhanced future for banking, where technology makes everyday tasks easier and people provide the judgment, relationships and accountability that build trust.
