MEDIA ADVISORY: CUPE 1883 rallies at Waterloo Regional Council as just three days remain to avoid a strike

KITCHENER, ON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--With just two days of bargaining remaining before CUPE 1883’s September 26 strike deadline, union members, concerned residents, and allies will rally outside of Waterloo Regional Council on Wednesday evening. They will call on Regional Council to reverse management’s course at the bargaining table, show urgency to reach a fair deal, and commit to investing in critical public services.

Despite the looming strike deadline, the Region has continued to bargain for the ability to impose further job losses on its frontline workforce. Any further cuts would compound years of job losses at a time when Waterloo Region is growing rapidly and public services are already under pressure.

Since 2021, the Region has lost approximately 10 per cent of its frontline workers while the population has grown by roughly 100,000 residents. Further reductions in the workforce would make it harder to provide critical public services that CUPE 1883 members are responsible for, including public health, housing, employment, children’s services, transit, water, planning, and more.
