UL Solutions Introduces Certification Program for Prefabricated Data Center Power Distribution Systems, Awards First Certification to Schneider Electric

The new program helps support the rapid deployment of AI and hyperscale data centers by providing a modular certification pathway for factory-built power distribution systems.

(NYSE: ULS), a global leader in applied safety science, today announced Schneider Electric, a global energy technology leader, has achieved the first certification under a new UL Solutions program created to help address the safety evaluation needs associated with growing demand for factory-built integrated power systems in AI and hyperscale data center projects.

The growth of artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital services is driving unprecedented demand for new data center compute capacity. To keep pace, hyperscale operators and their suppliers are increasingly adopting modular, factory-built power infrastructure that can be assembled, tested and delivered more efficiently than traditional on-site construction.

The first certification was earned by Schneider Electric under UL 2140, the Outline of Investigation for Prefabricated Power Distribution Assemblies, a new framework that provides a certification pathway to evaluate integrated power assemblies, commonly known as open power skids, that can combine switchboards, uninterruptible power supplies, batteries and related electrical equipment on a common skid before delivery to a project site.

Certification evaluates the complete factory-built assembly and its interconnected components for compliance with applicable United States National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements and UL Standards for equipment safety. Through follow-up services at the manufacturing location, UL Solutions assesses whether certified products continue to be produced in accordance with the requirements established during certification. This approach can support production consistency as suppliers scale to meet growing demand for data center infrastructure.

Schneider Electric's prefabricated power assemblies¹ are built in a controlled factory environment, where major equipment is installed, secured and interconnected before shipment. By moving more work off-site, manufacturers can reduce field installation complexity and deliver standardized solutions for large-scale projects.
