Amtrak Supports Rail Safety Nationwide

NTSB Holds Chicago Briefing, Operation Lifesaver “See Tracks? Think Train” campaign, Emergency Responders enlist in “Operation Clear Track”

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--This is Rail Safety Week. Since safety is the first priority at Amtrak, America’s Railroad has joined forces with stakeholders to promote education and enforcement across the United States.

“This year we are honored to host a media briefing in Chicago by National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy,” said Steve Predmore, Amtrak Executive Vice President and Chief Safety Officer. “This is in addition to our annual projects of “Operation Clear Track” and “See Tracks? Think Train Week,” both with Operation Lifesaver, a national non-profit advancing rail safety. While we appreciate the additional public focus this brings, we promote rail safety externally and internally every day and every week.”

More than 200 police and other agencies have answered the call from the Amtrak Police Department to step up both education and enforcement of traffic safety laws this Tuesday, Sept. 22. Police Chief James Cook is striving this year to top last year’s distribution of more than 70,000 rail safety education cards at crossings and other locations across the country.

Notching its 10^th anniversary and formerly known as Rail Safety Week, this is a concentrated week of rail safety education led by Operation Lifesaver and partners focusing attention on the importance of making safe choices when driving or walking near railroad tracks and trains.
