MIT-Trained Aerospace Engineer and Entrepreneur Peter Reinhardt Commits $1M to Fermi Explorer Interstellar Mission

Serial Entrepreneur, Reinhardt, Joins as Advisor to Send Humanity’s First Spacecraft to Another Star

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Fermi Explorer Mission announced today that Peter Reinhardt, an MIT-trained aerospace engineer and serial entrepreneur, is joining as an advisor, and he and his wife Erika are committing $1 million to the ambitious space project. The non-profit initiative is dedicated to launching humanity’s first spacecraft to the nearest star system, Alpha Centauri, by the end of 2029.

Reinhardt brings a formidable combination of deep engineering knowledge and startup execution expertise to the Fermi Explorer team. While studying aerospace engineering at MIT, he co-founded his first major venture, Segment, a customer data platform. Under his leadership as CEO, Segment grew rapidly, scaling to hundreds of employees before being acquired by Twilio in 2020 for $3.2 billion, then the largest Y Combinator acquisition in history. Most recently, Reinhardt founded and serves as CEO of Charm Industrial, a pioneering climate technology enterprise focused on novel carbon removal and deep underground sequestration. He also serves as CEO of Revoy building America’s electric autonomous freight network.

While he has spent the last decade building massive successes in enterprise software and climate tech, Reinhardt’s educational roots lie in aerospace engineering. His $1 million commitment marks a return to his original academic passion. His proven track record of solving complex, world-scale engineering challenges and deploying sustainable, large-scale solutions positions him as an ideal advisor for executing an unprecedented interstellar mission.
