Illumia Appoints Don Smith to Lead Higher Education Portfolio

New role brings Illumia’s higher education commerce, identity and payments businesses under one leader

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Illumia, a leading provider of technology solutions that power payments, identity, commerce and foodservice operations across higher education, healthcare and corporate campuses, today announced the appointment of Don Smith to senior vice president & general manager, higher education. Smith will work across product, technology, commercial and customer teams to better connect Illumia’s products and experiences. The goal is to make it easier for colleges and universities to deliver a consistent experience across campus, adopt new capabilities, and build on existing technology investments as their needs evolve.

Smith most recently led Illumia’s integrated payments business, where he oversaw product strategy and market expansion, including the recent addition of PayPal and Venmo as tuition payment options within the institutions’ existing payment portals. Earlier in his career, Smith helped establish and grow the integrated payments portfolio that is now part of Illumia. He brings more than 15 years across software and financial services.

“Institutions expect their technology to work together, and not as a collection of separate products,” said Greg Brown, CEO of Illumia. “Don brings the product leadership, business experience and deep understanding of this market to help us deliver on that expectation. His leadership will be important as we sharpen our strategy and position the business for its next phase of growth.”

The appointment is part of a broader shift in how Illumia builds products. Teams are being organized around customer problems and shared outcomes, with priorities set across the portfolio instead of within individual product lines.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to guide our higher education business at a moment when we're uniquely positioned to offer one connected experience across payments, identity, commerce, and intelligence,” said Smith. "My focus is working with our strong and motivated teams as well as our campus partners to bring our portfolio together around a single product vision: a campus where students move without friction and administrators have the intelligence to act before problems arise."
