“We’re proud to partner with Maui Health Foundation because they make an incredible impact on the lives of our Maui community,” said Ed Freedman, founder of Stable Road Foundation. “We’re grateful to all our supporters who helped fund this project for trusting us to be the steward of their gifts. Together, we’ll ensure the people of Maui receive exceptional healthcare when they need it most.”

Stable Road Foundation’s $2 million matching fund jumpstarted Maui Health Foundation’s $4.1 million project. Thanks to the generosity of Stable Road Foundation in making the seed gift, Maui Health Foundation was able to raise the remaining funds swiftly and efficiently. Additional support was provided by Nan and Wayne Kocourek ($1.6 million) and an anonymous donor ($500,000).

The initiative includes the new MRI system and hospital suite renovation, along with a temporary mobile 3T MRI unit to provide uninterrupted care to island residents during construction.

"This extraordinary investment reflects what is possible when a community comes together to invest in the health of its people," said Melinda Sweany, Chief Philanthropy Officer for Maui Health Foundation. "We are deeply grateful to Ed Freedman’s Stable Road Foundation, and every donor whose generosity made this possible. Replacing our aging MRI with one of the most advanced imaging systems available ensures that Maui residents will continue to receive world-class diagnostic imaging right here at home. This remarkable investment will improve patient care, advance earlier and more accurate diagnoses, and save lives for generations to come."

Once installed, the new system will provide more accuracy and efficiency for the 4,500+ MRI scans performed annually on Maui. Treatment will also be less stressful for patients as the machine is capable of 50% faster scans with up to 80% noise reduction.

Ed Freedman’s Stable Road Foundation has a long track record of improving health outcomes on Maui. Previously, the Foundation helped Maui Health equip its new Heart, Brain & Vascular Center and acquire life-saving equipment like the Impella heart pump and two heart-lung machines.

Founded by Freedman in 2017, Stable Road Foundation is committed to serving the people of Hawaii. The Foundation recently partnered with Governor Josh Green, Invest America, and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation to make Hawaii the first state in the nation to fund a Trump Account for every eligible foster child. Stable Road Foundation has also spearheaded reconstruction efforts following the 2023 Maui wildfires, including building homes for displaced families, constructing a new campus for Sacred Hearts School, and delivering clean water to hundreds of Maui residents in need.

Stable Road Foundation is always looking for new partners to help meet the needs of Hawaii’s communities. If you or your organization would like to support one of our projects—or make a gift for the Foundation to steward into the community—please contact us.
